Default Spurrier slams talk of late-season swoon

Spurrier slams talk of late-season swoon
Quote:
A year ago, the Gamecocks dropped the last three games of their season to Florida, Clemson and Iowa by a total score of 118-30. In 2007, after starting 6-1 to gain a No. 6 national ranking, USC lost its last five games and sat home during bowl season.

Although the University of South Carolina enters Saturday's Southeastern Conference game at the University of Arkansas with a 6-3 record, its error-plagued performance against the Volunteers has many wondering which way the team will go in 2009.

Carolina coach Steve Spurrier did everything in his power to downplay that talk Tuesday.

“We haven't lost to Eastern Illinois, somebody like that,” Spurrier said. “We've lost to some pretty good teams on the road. So don't try to make us feel bad. We don't. We don't feel bad. We had a lousy game last week, but we don't feel bad.”
I really like this quote...it sums it up and I'm glad he said it. Good to know even if some fans have lost their mind in regards to expectations, he understands where we're at, what we've done, and what we need to do. I really wish we'd give our guys more support instead of being so fickle with them...lose a game and you're support is gone is the attitude a lot have...it makes no sense. We have Steve Spurrier. We're not the 1990's Florida Gators. A big part of our problem is we've never had an identity and we never will at this rate, because everyone wants us to be the old Florida Gators instead of really embracing the idea of a New Carolina. We have so many positives on this young team, but it ticks me off when I go to the Cock Walk and there's hardly anybody there to let our guys know we supporting them and they have us rabid fans to live up to. Our team is very young and if we bail on them how can we not expect them to bail on us? And don't give me this free education, headed to the nfl, leading the good life bullcrap. These dudes are competitive athletes who want to win and show off for us, but not if we don't care and don't support them. So with that, I'm glad SOS said what he said and like I said in the Arky prediction thread, we're going to slaughter them.

As a guy on the radio stated, shouldnt we feel bad, whenever i lose anything i walk away ashamed thinking about how bad it was to lose. Feeling bad is okay if you use that to motivate yourself, i might feel bad when i lose to someone in a race but next time i race them im going to have put the effort in to get better, remember how bad it felt and kick butt

??? Has any good team ever lost to Eastern Illinois? We haven't played them since like 2000. We play Arkansas, Florida, and Clemson. Just because we don't play E. Illinois or team like them, does not make it okay to come out stink up the field like we did against Florida, Clemson, and Iowa last year. But I guess as long as they all "feel good" than that makes it fine.

Although I don't post in here much......

I think USC would benefit by petitioning the SEC to break the schedule up a bit .
The late season falloff has been the case since 95.
USC has played UT,UF ,and CU late since 95. In those games USC is 8-38.

I agree that it could be worse, but we WANT better. With those losses we're still stuck in mediocreville.

Utterly ridiculous. Tennessee and Florida are division opponents. We're going to have to play them at some point. It makes no difference if it's in September, October, or November. Far apart, or back-to-back.

And, what would Clemson have to do with the SEC schedule?

I don't think it is ridiculous. it makes a big difference when you play teams like UF and UT and ARK late in the season. We are brusied up and haven't had a bye week. We're going into this difficult stretch with several of our starting defensive players out. I believe TR, Paulk, Culliver and the other injured players make an impact on our defense and we are more likely to win when they are healthy.

So you think it's reasonable to "petition the SEC" to have those games rescheduled?

What alternative would you recommend? Move Tennessee to the beginning of the season, and move Georgia closer to Florida? Move Florida closer to Alabama? It's the SEC...there's no escaping the competition.

We'd be the laughing stock of the conference -nay, the country - if we petitioned to have the schedule adjusted.

Default Re: Spurrier slams talk of late-season swoon

How can Spurrier get upset people are talking about what they think could happen with the remaining games? We were what #6 in the nation a few years ago, sitting at 6-1??? Ended the season at 6-6. The program has taken a lot of lumps, especially at the end of the season. When we are 6-3 now with 3 games to go, what does Spurrier think the rest of the nation is thinking? We are playing a competitive Arkansas team, an undefeated, eye gouging Florida team, and our rival, who has pretty much owned us since the begining of football. Get pissed off that people are thinking the downward spiral is about to begin or coach em' up and win. I believe we can win with the talent we have in place. I believe our coaches have the knowledge to get us over the hump. I am a Gamecock before the games and I am a Gamecock after the games, even the ones we lose. If we go 6-6, I am going to be wearing my Gamecock gear and if we go 9-3 or any where in between I am going to be wearing my Gamecock gear.

Easiest way to make those who are down on the program shut up? WIN and prove we are ready to compete with the big boys of the SEC.
