Arkansas result could boost or burst Gamecocks' late momentum

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The 2009 football season for the University of South Carolina has reached a crossroads.

The path the Gamecocks take the rest of the way probably will be determined in today’s game against the University of Arkansas.

Coming off a stinging loss at Tennessee a week ago, the Gamecocks enter Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium eager to make sure what has been a successful season remains that way.

A win today would secure a winning season for Carolina (6-3, 3-3) and at least a .500 finish in the Southeastern Conference with home games against Florida and Clemson remaining. Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier, who is 2-2 against the Razorbacks while at USC, also sees a win as a chance to move up in the conference hierarchy.

I saw that line in the story, but didn't really read the corresponding quote that way. And I kind of disagree anyway - I don't really care how we stack up against the West in the grand scheme of things because we play in the East. If we want to be relevant in the conference we have to overcome UF, UT, and UGA, not Arkansas (though, no doubt a win would help our conf record). But until we somehow get past one or more of the big 3 in the East, we will not "move up in the conference hierarchy."

The quote said conference hierarchy, not division hierarchy. Arkansas is regularly considered to be a program ahead of South Carolina in the SEC.
