Thanks Swim. That's about my take on it. Radakovic has hair now guys, he totally botched some NCAA thing down there, also didn't he lock them into that terrible contract with the last basketball head coach they had?

But from the comments of "insiders" on various boards, and from indications that Ray has given in a recent interview with Phil Kornblut, it seems clear that Ray himself is the one who wants to stop coaching baseball in the relatively near future and work as an administrator of athletics at a very high level. So, I think what some fans are thinking is that we are going to lose Ray as our baseball coach in a year or two or three one way or another--unless he changes his mind--because it seems he has had his heart set on trying out his skills in the area of administration for a long time. Ray Tanner is a multi-talented man with a lot of gifts and interests, and I think at some point he wants to try to be even more than the greatest college baseball coach in the country. I commend him for that. That said, if we're going to lose him as a baseball coach when he steps into administration either here or somewhere else, if he doesn't get the chance here, then some fans feel like they'd rather see him get the chance to be our AD than lose him to another school. I'm in this boat myself--I think Ray is very gifted and would do a terrific job, and I'd like to see him get a shot.

I can see both sides of this argument, and I trust Pastides to make a good hire. My main point, in response to your prior post, was that it's not that fans are saying, "Hey, let's take our best coach ever and promote him to AD because he would be great at that!" Rather, the fans are trying to make sense out of a situation where it seems like it is Ray himself who wants to leave coaching and go into administration.

I have no "tangible" evidence, but I am not certain we make the run we did the last 3 years WITHOUT Chad Holbrook!

What is the likelihood that Ian McCaw will be a frontrunner for the new AD job and what do y'all think about the fit?

I keep asking myself this question....are we ready for Ray Tanner to hang up the baseball cleats for a suit and tie administrative position? I like the baseball cleats, personally.

I don't know that it's possible but let's hope that the committee is thinking upgrade ;)
Listening to Coach Tanner's interview, he clearly implies that he's by no means ready to stop coaching just yet but if the University comes calling he'll do his part. You gotta love him. |

According to Kornblut, looks like BOT chair Miles Loadholt wants Tanner as AD ASAP. Korn also reports that Ray is ready bring back Brad Edwards and Chris Massaro in high ranking positions. Looks like the McGee era again. Not sure I dig that.

You have to admit Ray has nothing else to prove as a college baseball coach. I know this is an extremely important job and not to be taken lightly but Ray is a consummate professional and has been very successful at every level in his career. I hope he gets the job.

Yeah, I don't like that idea at all.
Don't mind Tanner so much, but I don't want to see us take a step backwards in terms of our staff. Whatever the BOT decides I hope they carefully consider it. Our athletics program as a whole is starting to move up in the SEC, we need to get someone in who can continue that.

With the recruiting class shaping up for baseball, the smart move to me is to give Tanner a raise that would make the move unattractive for now, offer him a kind of internship, and a later move to assistant AD and a path to AD if open. His leaving the BB program now would be a blow to the program, and a raise would be in order anyway.

Not sure about Coach Tanner as AD or not, but I know there will be a whole bunch of second guessing going on around here if he takes the AD job and Carolina Baseball fails to reach at least the Super Regionals next year under a different coach.
My thought is that if it is a close call between Coach Tanner and some other highly qualified AD candidate (not Edwards, btw), why screw up the best thing to happen to Carolina athetics in a long time by moving him from head baseball coach to AD? Even if he only coaches another three or four years as some have suggested, that is four more great chances that we win the CWS. There is no other baseball coach (Holbrook included) that gives us as good a chance to win it all as a focused Coach Ray Tanner. |

Go ahead and cut Ray Tanner's name out of the discussion because he just told WISTV that he isnt ready to give up coaching yet and he doesnt think a duel role is doable. Move on.

Ray was interviewed on WIS tonight. He said he wanted to continue coaching for a few more years. He also said that he could not complete 'two roles' as the AD's position needed more time than that.
Sounds to me like he's ruling himself out. |
