I love going into the Proving Grounds this time of year and reading old threads. None of us are psychics but the words that are given prove themselves wise or foolish in hindsight. It is also amusing to see some of the growth in expectation in the athletes we recruit from the Holtz years to current day.

Saved by the Bell's Zack Morris was a serial killer

It is all circumstantial evidence but it seems pretty solid, what with new girlfriends constantly being introduced for Zack and disappearing after their one episode, even though they're usually set up the way that other shows would introduce recurring characters. It was especially egregious in the cases of the homeless girl who (along with her father) was about to move into Zack's house, as well as Slater's previously unseen sister. While Lisa (being a main cast member) didn't disappear after the episode where she and Zack started dating, the relationship was dropped after the one episode. The only non-main cast girlfriend to stick around was Stacy during the "Malibu Sands" mini-season, but she still suffered from this trope, as even though the run of episodes ended with them saying they'd stick together in a long-distance relationship while she went back to New York, she was never mentioned again after the Malibu Sands recap episode at the beginning of the senior year season. Also, you didn't have to be a Zack love interest to suffer from this: Denise Richards' character, in the last Malibu Sands episode was set up as a new recurring or regular character ("She's going to Bayside with us!") and a love interest for Slater, but never seen again. Earlier, Violet disappeared without explanation after a several episode run that left Screech without his girlfriend and pining for Lisa again.

Zack fits the profile of a serial killer. According to serial killer expert Harold Schechter, the following characteristics typify the serial killer:

• The majority are single, white males.
• They are often intelligent, with IQs in the "bright normal" range.
• Despite their high IQs, they do poorly in school, have trouble holding down jobs, and often work menial jobs.
• They tend to come from unstable families.
• As children, they are typically abandoned by their fathers and raised by domineering mothers.
• Their families often have criminal, psychiatric and alcoholic histories.
• They often are mistrustful of their parents.
• It is common to find that as children, they were abused—psychologically, physically and/or sexually—by a family member.
• Many spend time in institutions as children and have records of early psychiatric problems.
• They have high rates of suicide attempts.
• From an early age, many are intensely interested in voyeurism, fetishism, and sadomasochistic pornography.
• More than 60 percent wet their beds beyond the age of 12.
• Many are fascinated with fire starting.
• They are involved in sadistic activity or torturing small animals.

Zack fits squarely into eight of the fourteen categories. Zack is obviously single and white. We also know that he is exceedingly bright as evidenced by the fact that he scored a 1502 on the SAT without even trying. Furthermore, despite the fact that Zack is vastly intelligent – even more so than SBTB “brains” Jessie and Screech – the series constantly references Zack’s poor performance in school. In addition, Zack’s family is clearly unstable. His parents have little involvement in his life and rarely appear in the series. Furthermore, Zack’s father Derrick Morris is almost wholly absent. For example, in the episode “Rent-a-Pop,” Zack’s father will only pay attention to him if Zack calls him on a cell phone. Zack also has trouble trusting his parents, or any other adults for that matter. Even more troubling, the only animals ever left in Zack’s care during the series – Becky the Duck and Artie the Lizard – ended up dead.


Markedly, Zack demonstrates an intense interest in voyeurism and mind control. In the early episode “Fatal Distraction,” Zack and Screech bug the girls’ sleepover party in order to find out who Kelly is going to take to the dance. Later, in the episode “Jessie’s Song,” Zack has Screech dress up as a cleaning lady so he can record the girls singing in the locker room. Finally, in the episode “The Zack Tapes,” Zack uses subliminal messages in a cassette tape so that Kelly will date him. These are not the healthy pastimes of a normal child.


Several other characteristics, while not explicitly present in the series, are certainly possible, or even likely. For example, it is possible that psychiatric problems, or possibly even a suicide attempt, may have led to the Morris family’s relocation from Indiana, where Zack studied under the domineering Miss Bliss, to Bayside. In addition, Zack’s constant scheming may have emerged from a profound shame of his bed-wetting. Zack’s family history is also inherently suspect. Zack’s father Derrick always struck this reviewer as a lush and, considering his high-powered job in computer sales, possibly even a cokehead. Zack’s mother, Melanie, also exhibits a cavalier attitude toward drug use. In the episode “Fake I.D.’s,” Mrs. Morris is depicted returning from a Peter, Paul, and Mary concert singing Puff the Magic Dragon, a song closely associated with marijuana. Finally, though Zack is never abused in an episode, in the episode “Rent-a-Pop,” Zack hires an actor to portray his father in a meeting with Mr. Belding so that Mr. Morris will not discover that Zack is failing a class. Presumably, Zack fears his father’s reprisal and takes great pains to avoid a harsh punishment.

I had fun reading the first few pages of the Alshon Jeffery (Commitment) thread also...it is funny how some of the people knew for a fact we had no shot to get him and that he was not fast enough for college ball...the latter complaint is actually what some fans are saying about Jeffery's NFL prospects.

An international team of archaeologists have discovered that two mummies found on an island off the coast of Scotland are, like Dr. Frankenstein's monster, composed of body parts from several different humans. The mummified remains, as much as 3,500 years old, suggest that the first residents of the island of South Uist in the Hebrides had some previously unsuspected burial practices.

The West Coast of South Uist was densely populated from around 2000 BC until the end of the Viking period around AD 1300. Researchers led by archaeologist Michael Parker-Pearson of the University of Sheffield have been working at a site near the modern graveyard of Cladh Hallan, which gives the site its name. The team has so far excavated three roundhouses from a village that was apparently occupied from around 2200 BC to 800 BC. A little more than a decade ago, they found the two skeletons under one of the houses, as well as the remains of a teenage girl and a 3-year-old child.
The two primary skeletons were buried in a fetal position and showed evidence of having been preserved. Chemical evidence suggests they were mummified by being placed in nearby peat bogs for a year or longer. The high acidity and low oxygen content of the bog prevents bacteria from breaking down body tissues. After preservation, the skeletons were apparently removed from the bog and buried.

But the skeletons did not "look right" to the researchers. The female's jaw didn't fit into the rest of her skull, for example. Closer examination of the male, they reported in the Journal of Archaeological Science, showed that arthritis was present on the vertebrae of the neck, but not on the rest of the spine. The lower jaw had all of its teeth, while the upper jaw had none; but the condition of the lower jaw's teeth showed that they had been paired with upper teeth. The team concluded that the skeleton has been assembled from parts of at least three bodies, some of which were separated by several hundred years of time.
