The difference in the amount of money handled, by itself, shouldn't be something that discredits him. I think it's a bonus that he has familiarity with it in the first place. At the same time, I'd be an idiot to go so far as to say that his familiarity with it, alone, is enough to hire him.

Believe it or not, there have been people hired to positions with even greater authority that would benefit from having some level of competency in accounting, but have absolutely zero, and still demonstrate themselves to be good at their jobs. Obviously, that position would have to involve that person taking advice from real accountants. Tanner has that here anyway. At the same time, in the end, it's a small but notable plus that he's done it on a smaller (but still significant) scale on his own, IMO.

An assistant AD job at NC State 15 years ago does not even compare to the AD job in its entirety here. I would hardly call that experience. Our AD department is bigger and more involved than it's ever been and we want to hire away our best coach to do the job with no previous experience.

There are plenty of experienced candidates that could handle this job while keeping our baseball coach doing what he does best. That is the best scenario.

Ray shouldn't have a problem getting a chance to be an AD at a smaller school after he retires from baseball and he can fulfill his goal there.

Hey you know that brain surgery you had scheduled? Well the doctor we had lined up retired, but don't worry we got a great fill in! Now he's never actually been a brain surgeon before, but he did assist on surgeries for a few years...a couple decades ago...but hey that's ok because he's been working in the ICU since then. On top of all that he's a really great guy and any shortcomings he has at operating on your brain will just be filled by all of the great OR personnel he surrounds himself with. He's a really nice and well spoken and he's driven to succeed. We didn't even see a need to contact brain surgeons at other hospitals when we had this guy already on our staff.

See where I'm going with this??

Being someone that is looking for a job and constantly gets told my experience isnt right fir the job, I am going to call BS. Experience sometimes means you are set in tour ways on how things should be done. I am sure Tanner has been preparing for this opportunity for a long time and is ready to jump in and take a hold of things. I would rather have a coach as Athletic Director that knows what it takes to win than a business man that THINKS he knows what it takes.

Why would anyone think Tanner couldn't do the job? He has earned the right to pursue being our AD if he wants. He's been around the block and I have faith he can be an awesome AD. To me he is the perfect choice. He won his titles here and is a Gamecock. There was a reason we got Holbrooke, to take over for Tanner. Holbrooke wouldn't have come here if he wasn't asured he be the next HC. He had a good thing going at UNC, like it or not, and would not have left there had we not asured him he'd take over for Tanner. I think the timing is right and I think Holbrooke will make a great HC and Tanner will be a great AD.

So you want to compare a job where a person's life is at stake with an athletic director's job?

Logical fallacy

A move by Tanner is more akin to a Manager moving up to a VP or Director level position in a big company. It happens all the time, especially if the Manager is qualified, experienced, successful, respected, and has other characteristics that fit the job. Even VPs and Director level management personnel often move up to EVPs, CFOs, CEOs, and COOs.

Tanner has served the University of South Carolina exceptionally well as baseball coach. He built a stadium; won back to back championships; his teams set all kinds of records. He won the last national championship in one stadium and the first in another; history can never change that. Tanner has earned the right to do what he wants to do. If being AD now is on his list, he has earned it.

Trust me Holbrooke was not told he was going to be our next hc. The main reason that he is here is wanting to have his family close to other family members after his son, Reece, went through his illness. Now don't get me wrong he would love to be our coach here but that is not the biggest reason he left unc. You have to remember that his wife is from Columbia and in fact (and no I will not say exactly where) his mother-in-law lives right near the baseball field. I hope he is our coach because imo he is the reason we got over the hump and won NC's. Tanner is also someone I think would become just as good an AD as he is a Coach. He is driven and will run a tight ship.
