Default NCAA sanctions CalTech

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaab-...97--ncaab.html

The NCAA has continued its string of rediculous behaviour in sanctioning division 3 academic powerhouse CALTECH, quite possibly the weakest athletic school in the nation. Evidently, because they have a 3 week program that allows students to try out classes before they sign up, they were deemed to have played academically ineligible students.

Yet another sign that the NCAA is completely out of control. Even though I loved the result, I thought it was rediculous when they made AJ Green sit out 4 games for selling his own jersey. Also, as much as I don't like Ohio State, I could care less whether or not their players recieved free tattooes.

The NCAA is not out of control it might inconsistent but not out of control. The NCAA purpose is to build character and prepare student athletes for the real world and if they cannot follow simple rules by the NCAA what do you think will happen in the real world? I think the NCAA needs to be harsher on those who get paid, sell merchandise, and all that other stuff.

It's a pretty insignificant penalty. Something that won't even hurt them.
They won't get close to the playoffs for it to matter. It's just the NCAA stepping in to act like they did something

^What could the NCAA do other than hit a bunch of post season bans its not like they can take scholarships away since D-III doesn't have athletic scholarships.

Limit practice time, make their athletic program officials take "workshops"

But I get what your saying, just don't get why people are so mad at this considering it's not really going to hurt them anyway

I think the worst reprecussion is that it forces caltech to change the way student athletes sign up for classes in order to comply with the ncaa, which takes away from the athlete's overall academic experience.

Also, sure their basketball team may be terrible, but what if they've got an outstanding cross country or tennis team, laden with seniors, hoping that this is the year they finally make it to the ncaa championship meet. They also said some individual records had to be vacated. Could you imagine having to give up a record earned through years of hard work for something as stupid as this.

I'm a former division 3 athlete myself, 3 seasons, 4 years, at a very academic university. I guess that gives me a bit more sympathy for the injustice that these guys are facing.

The way they do their classes is stupid who ever their academic advisor in the athletic department should know their system was going to be a problem with NCAA. As a former D-I student athlete they don't get any sympathy from me, they broke NCAA rules they must pay the consequenses for it.

After looking at all of their sports from the past year they were all terrible. I don't think anyone was close to .500. But I see your point.
