right so we should take away one item that actually does bring money in to some way to the unversity ? im not saying their shouldnt be punishements im just answering the question should PSU get rid of the football team and should the NCAA punish them ..my answer no... i do not see what that accomplishes?

That is pretty much all false at this point, they just set into law a new rule on tuition hikes. They must be below the rate of inflation. You're just making things up at this point.

It forces the university, its student body, and community to re-evaluate what is most important in life...and its not football.

Overall i guess it teaches them to not break the law and for everyone to report anything suspicious to police etc. If anything doesn't make sense getting a tattoo is a stupid thing to get punished for. Sexual harrassment is something on a whole different level and they should keep a closer eye on their program to let this go on for this long.

Everyone who covered this up should have to appear in front of a jury. Football program death penalty, no, unless the players over the years covered up the knowledge of such goings on by sandusky

How do you think the university will pay out $100 million?

Maybe they'll increase "fees" rather than "tuition"

So the coaching staff and administration etc isn't enough? Why the players as well?

Oh wait you forget that the main subject was an assistant coach there for 30 years...

Didn't Penn State receive something like 200 mil in donations this past year?

They can't or they lose state funding. An agreement was just reached that in order for state funding not to decrease tuition must not increase more than the rate of inflation, which resulted in a hike of less than 3% at Penn State this year.

Penn State more than likely has enough in their emergency funds to cover the vast majority of 100 million over a short period. The just took in 200 million in donations this year. Terry Pegula just gave them 88 million alone.

I don't understand how anyone can say Penn State didn't gain "a competitve edge" due to Paterno et al.'s handling of the situation. The football program should be disbanded for some period of time. Let any player transfer w/ immediate eligibility.

As far as "punishing the wrong people" (which seems to be one of the objections to the death penalty): those that suffer from losing football at Penn State can look at Paterno, Curley, etc. as the reason they were made to "suffer", just like every victim who was raped by Sandusky after those men became aware of his heinous acts. This situation transcends young athletes' or coaches' right to participate in a game of sport.

So you're saying the university can afford to settle with all victims and not really feel it.

Yeah, glad to know they'll think twice before covering anything up for the sake of their god, football, ever again.

Would they feel it? Sure, its still a lot of money but it wouldn't break the university.

In reality State College is probably the safest place you could send a kid right now.

They wouldn't "feel it" in terms of their day-to-day operations, their goals for expansion as a university, etc. If this all can come straight from their emergency fund without feeling the effects otherwise, then its not much of a punishment, and I love to hear someone argue otherwise.

There's a reason they call them "punitive damages"

I would very much so say that any punishment should be confined to the athletic department. The general student population, the academic staff, and general university staff had nothing to do with this and as such shouldn't be punished for it.

So, if the settlements come straight out of the emergency fund and have no effect on the athletic dept...what punishment would you propose for the athletic dept?

None at all?

Think of it like this- when Big Tobacco had to pay out all those settlements about a decade or so ago, do y'all not think it costs innocent people their jobs?

That's life. Punishment hurts more than just the guilty, but that shouldn't be an argument against punishment.

The difference being this is an institution of higher learning that is public state related and not a private for profit business. Thats a huge distinction.

The punishment is not a simple decision, its a easy start by getting rid of all involved but beyond that it gets quite complicated.

So no actual punishment to the athletics dept?
