Half of todays teachers are incompetent. Why in the Holy name of god "education" exists as a major is beyond me...have math majors take a minor in education, have them teach math. You have a metric shit ton of "education" majors who failed college algebra and SURVEY of Bio/chem and these ass clowns are "teaching". /end rant
As a real scientist and a teacher, I will fail a kid with a smile on my face because i give out test review sheets with topics they must know following a review session the day before a test. If they fail they were too stupid to pass or too lazy to study...either way, they earned their fail. And Im on my phone so ignore the rampant errors, I admit I'm too lazy to correct them right now.

does it have to do with most schools being "public" i know this is a can of worms but with the healthcare thing coming up, does putting all the tax payers dollars in a pot and then delagating money to schools affect the quality education, do you think we would be better off if we were strickly private schools. just a question.

Yes. Education, like healthcare, retirement and income are the responsibilities of the parent not the government.

My girlfriend works at a Columbia area high school and the administration is definitely a huge part of the problem there. She tells me the things that her kids do and it blows my mind. When I was a high school student at South Aiken from 01-04, we would have been written up in a heartbeat for these types of behaviors. Getting written up and disciplined was enough to deter most people at my high school from breaking rules, especially the more serious ones. At the school she works at, she will write a kid up and then the administrators will just send them back to class. I also know coaches who have been told that they could not cut kids because they were scared of lawsuits. I am assuming the administration has similar reasons for being spineless with classroom conduct. At any rate, this has seriously ruined the authority of the teachers at this school and the entire place is a zoo. They also have things called I.E.P.'s where kids can say they have a learning disability (i.e. ADD) and can do stupid things like listen to their iPod during class. A very high percentage of kids at this school have these I.E.P.'s. If you don't allow them to do these things, the teacher is in serious trouble. Also, kids know that they don't have to pass their classes because they can do a program called APEX where they just have to come to school a few extra weeks and do easy computer courses and get their diploma. Oh, and they also have a system where a student can do absolutely nothing the first nine weeks of the semester and have a 0%, but their grade will be wiped clean and they get a fresh start for the second nine weeks. I don't know how many other schools or districts have these programs, but these kids are completely unprepared for the real world. It's absurd.

The thing that gets to me even more is whe people teach things other than what their major was. I know people that were English majors and teach math. How does that happen?

As a public HS teacher, here are my .02 cents.
1) Lack of accountability on the student's shoulders. I've heard of schools that won't allow you to give any grade below a 60, even if they don't answer a single question. How does that teach responsibility and accountability? It isn't this way at my school, thank God. 2) Lack of discipline. I live and die by the adage, a consequence must be harsh enough to prevent the action. In public ed, the consequences amount to slaps on the wrists. I've seen students with rap sheets with over 30 disciplinary issues and when I send them to the admin, they come back with a block of ISS. This all amounts to seat time. Can't take the student out of the class because then they won't learn a thing, which means less real discipline and more wrist slaps. And they get 5 full days to make up any work missed because of suspension, instead of accepting 0s. 3) Most parents could care less about the performance or behavior of their child. Sad but true. Most parents take their child's word as the word of God. I had a student this past year who was a grade A jackass. When I wrote him up, I got a phone call from his parent that lasted around 20min explaining to me how there is no way her son would do these things. She thought he was a "borderline genius" even though he could barely carry a B in my CP class. 4) IEPs are easier to get than candy in a candy store. Too many students have them that don't need them. They are great for the ones who need them, but there is a problem when the resource teacher allows students to us notes, book, internet, etc on test retakes. This is after the student didn't answer any questions on his first attempt because he knew he could get an easy retake. Why try period when it is this easy. 5) The student's don't want to learn. Why? Why teach critical thinking skills when all you have to do is look up anything of Google? This is from the horses mouth. We live in a world of instant gratification and this has turned the youth's minds to mush. You would be amazed at the level of difficulty that an simple assignment like, label this map, gives some students. When I finish a chapter, I devote an entire day to review and I give out a study guide that comes directly from the test (which I tell and show the students) yet a still get horrible results. When I ask who used the study guide, the hands of the students that passed go up, the ones who failed stay down. Can't blame the teacher for that. 6) Education department personnel who have NO education background. Educators need to be making education decisions. Major problem there. With that said, are there bad teachers? Absolutely. I've seen them. They exist. Are there good students? Absolutely. We have some amazingly talented students in my school. I think there are flaws in our teach to the test society. Every year they place more and more restrictions on what we can teach and how we can teach it. Blame goes to all levels; federal, state and local governments, district office, administrators, teachers, parents, and students. Sorry for being so long, just wanted to cover all my bases. |

The US is awful at mathematics and sciences, on average, because many teachers of these topics dont comprehend the topics AND students are too busy doing whatever they damn well please at home so then the parents blame teachers for their laziness...

I don't think you can indict the schools for an athlete's failure to meet minimum qualification standards. A kid and his family who have a full ride staring them in the face if they only meet the minimum, have got to get the job done. It's not that hard. If they don't they pay the price.
