Twitter is what you make of it. I follow college football reporters and recruiting experts in addition to several reporters. The staggering benefit of twitter is its "real time" element. Stories that take hours to hit TV and websites a broken immediately. You can track trends and real time reactions to innumerable events and stories.

If all you know of twitter is "I ate a meatball sub YOLO" then you're following the wrong people. It's a fantastic tool when utilized properly for getting up to the minute info or links to articles/videos by trusted and well-like sources.

But if you don't like it, don't use it. See how that works? (and I'm personally for banning it for the players. It has the potential to cause too many problems and distractions. Self- imposed his own ban about a month ago. Focus on the task at hand.)

I'm following a few current, former, and future Gamecock football players and it's often interesting reading. Most of the kids are pretty solid citizens and haven't tweeted anything detrimental to USC.

Hope it is allowed to continue. Maybe a more measured approach would be a few simple guidelines rathern than an outright ban.

Hope they do it again. Too much chance of an emotional kid (and remember these guys are young, very competitive, men) tweeting something in anger and frustration or in cockiness.

As you said, they didn't tweet anything detrimental to USC last year. Maybe thats because they werent allowed to use Twitter while plenty of schools who did allow it had kids say something dumb. Why take the chance? SHUT IT DOWN coach.

I think it might be being urged by some of the leaders on the team like Latti and DJ, but not required because I still see Mike Davis and Kendric Salley every once in awhile. Unless, they are just breaking a rule?

Right now, I dont think it is ban but I think the players will ban it themselves and remind the young players. Dont want any of these young guys to pull a Tajh! haha

It should be up to the individual players. A twitter ban is a bit heavy handed in this day and age of social media. This includes a so-called vote by the players to ban it. What a bunch of political crap is it in programs that use a vote as a cover for coaches afraid to make such a decision.

Let them use Twitter. These are young men. If they say something stupid or irresponsible, then they'll learn a valuable life lesson from it.

I love how people on message boards always talk about these things being a distraction for the players. They are 18-22 year olds. They are young. This is suppose to be the happiest time of their lives. Let them have their fun. It's not like we can shelter them from the world nor should we. It's their lives, so let them make their own decisions and learn to live with the consequences of their actions. They do have lives outside of the games they play for our enjoyment. Let them live them.

There is actually a great value to disseminating information as fast as possible. For example, Congress often tries to secretly vote on a bill that would take away your freedom, gun rights, etc. They try to slip stuff through. Twitter users are the people who find out and first initiate the action to stop some of the stupid stuff our Congress does to help out their corporate buddies. Earlier this year, they tried to slip through a law that would have made most YouTube users subject to felony prosecutions for alleged copyright violations. Twitter users put the word out and people rose up in a chorus. The gutless wonders who represent us got clued in and voted down the nonsense.

That is just an example.

You can hang around here for about ten minutes and you figure out why people want information fast.

Twitter is great. It's completely changed how news is reported and how people get information. It's also a HUGE marketing tool. People who think it's simply about posting what you're doing or what you're thinking must be following the wrong people.

Like someone said above, if you follow all 15 year old girls then yes....it's going to be stupid. Or even follow all personal accounts for that matter. If you follow someone and don't like what they have to say, GUESS WHAT? You can unfollow them and remove them from your timeline. Problem solved. It doesn't mean twitter as a whole is stupid because you don't like what some people use it for. Simply don't follow those people. Twitter is my primary source of news now, and I'm more informed on breaking news than nearly all of my friends who don't use it in that way.
