You do if he isn't one of the top 3 or 4 RB on the team after practices/scrimmages. We shall see.

This will be a tough decision for the coaches to make, but one we've been waiting on for a long time. Too many quality running backs, what a problem to have.

I don't see us redshirting him. From what my friend who's an athletic trainer says, Mike has been sharing carries with Kenny Miles. IMO, that says the coaches have an either-or listing as 2nd string RB between those two at the moment. Could be wrong, but just what I heard.

All though I agree with you in general; you don't play a guy just because he is a top 100 high school player either. There are always a lot of variables to asses and I'll leave that to the the C's.

I have a little contact with people in the know. They say he is too ready to play to be red shirted. We will have a stable if anybody needs a break or gets hurt.

When he's good enough (and probably will be) a 3 years & gone type of player, you don't redshirt him. No need to have another Sidney Rice situation where we only get 2/3 special years because we were being greedy when he first stepped on campus.

Not usually a good idea to redshirt a very talented running back. Chances are very slim that someone at the running back position is going to stick around 5 years so redshirt serves no purpose. Player has to stay for five years for redshirt to have really made a difference.

If there are questions about his play then you just have to evaluate whether the reward is worth the risk. It is the same with every player and not just because of how they were viewed in HS. Do I think he'll play this year? Yes I say the odds are that way.

If the guys that explosive you don't redshirt him. You have to have your best players available. Besides if he's that good he's going to climb up the depth chart inevitably anyway and only Lattimore will be ahead of him. Especially if he can pick up the blocking schemes.

Wilds was freshman and a 5th string RB that wasnt expecting to play, and the coaches werent expecting him to play. Im sure after his showing last season (three 100+ yard games), he has gained more confidence and experience. Im sure he has improved his blocking now that he adds to the proven depth. The coaches are probably giving him more reps and coaching in practice. He also looked really good in the scrimmage yesterday fwiw. Davis will probably play since we are going to be running more 2-back sets (which will increase his chances of seeing the field), but we have a lot of proven depth at this position. I can see him playing in the ECU, UAB, Wofford, and Clemson game (just to rub it in their face) this season to gain experience and limit Lattimore's carries. We have three proven rb's in Latt, Miles, and Wilds, and 4 with Connor. 2 with great potential in Carson and Davis. Last edited by JDRAY^#; 08-12-2012 at 09:57 AM. |

Couple of reasons why we'll be just fine if the receivers are a bust this year: first, Ace Sanders doesn't drop balls. Stick Ace on short hooks and slants and we'll move the ball. Second, Lattimore and the RB core are sure handed receivers. Create some comfy pass plays to the running backs and let them move the ball. Thirdly, we have reliable and talented TEs. Line up a few double TE sets and again, we'll move the ball. Not worried about our WRs at all.
