If they wanted to make a big deal out of this they would have done it in March or April and it would have been the focal point of this year's Masters. By doing it now they are showing that they did not cave to outside pressure and they they are admiting these women because they want to, not because they have to. Billy Payne has been quoted in the past as saying that he thought a women would be a member eventually.

The timing shows that they were pressured. They caught so much grief during the press conferences this year that it was finally the last straw . They are not going to do anything about it while the tournament is going on because then it looks like they caved to the pressure, so they wait till all the major tournaments are over so they don't step on anyone's toes and then they announce a few weeks later

I see the value in single-sex organizations, and I believe men-only events/associations have become undervalued a great deal... but Augusta National is something else entirely, it's too big and too prestigious to still be exclusive based on sex... Harvard, Yale, and Princeton would not be 3 of the best schools in the world if they were still male-only.


Also, I don't think they could have picked two better women... two bona fide badasses, both with Southern roots.

Agreed with this. If Augusta National did not host the Masters there would not be nearly as much of a push. But if they were going to continue to present themselves in such a public manner by hosting (arguably) the most prestigious championship in golf, it was time they made this move.

And I disagree that they were pressured in this instance specifically. Giving in would be granting Martha Burke a membership or giving a membership to someone else publicly threatening them. They took time and elected two very qualified women that they wanted, not two people who desperately wanted in. I'm happy they did it on their own terms.

Was it legal for them to be male-only, of course. Was it ethical, debateable.
