LB/DE Jalen Stevens of Goose Creek has taken one of his official visits, which was to Connecticut, and will hold off until the conclusion of his season for the rest of his visits. "I want to concentrate on my team and the playoffs," said Stevens. Arizona State and Southern Miss are strong possibilities. Stevens feels that Tennessee, Wake Forest and Ohio State are all close to offering which could affect which schools receive visits. "I'll visit those schools if they offer," he said. "I spoke with one of the coaches from Ohio State and I think they close (to offering)." North Carolina has also shown a lot of interest and could be in the mix. Stevens does not have a favorite.

For Shell, his Bio says:
"2011: Redshirted as a true freshman offensive lineman... saw action for four plays in the season opener against East Carolina... was hampered for much of the season with a shoulder injury."

So I guess you CAN play a few downs and redshirt somehow. So this is not considered a hardship waiver?

Seems like you'd have to apply with the NCAA for this type of redshirt since you could push the boundaries a bit. Just when I thought I had the distinction figured out...

Thats only for medical redshirt. Once you play a down your redshirt year is gone.. Latty can take a redshirt next year if he does not play a down. Medical redshirts are based on percentage of games played.. Wilds is taking (at the moment) a redshirt year. If he plays in the next few games it is burnt.. Remember back to when Jasper got hurt vs LSU. He was able to take a medical redshirt or hardship kinda same thing hardship just gives you an extra year to play one.

OK did the research yet another time. Listing Brandon Shell as a redshirt freshman is actually inaccurate. He played a few down against ECU last year, so he is a sophomore. There's apparently no rule stating that we can't call him a RS-Freshman. We do so because in all likelihood he will obtain a hardship waiver later on and be eligible for 3 more years after this one, if he's not going to jump to the draft.

He won't have to fill out any paperwork until after the 2014 season. As a student he is a sophomore. As a player, he is technically a true sophomore. He is eligible for a hardship waiver after his senior year, then he'll simply be a fifth year senior.

It's annoying that our own website has him miscategorized.

AFAIK, That's the same way that every other program classifies player classes in the that situation (except maybe Notre Dame).

Also, I can't remember who it was, but I think it was a WR in 2008 (I think either Mark Barnes or Joe Hills) who wasn't able to take a redshir... excuse me... "medical hardship" as a freshman due to some kind of error (I can't recall if it was a paperwork issue or something our coaches did.) Anyway, the point is, in this case we knew immediately that the 5th year would not be granted so he was listed as a sophomore on the 2009 roster. Does anyone else remember the details of this?

You can play more than a few plays, you can play whole GAMES (up to 30% or less of the season -- or about 3 games) and STILL qualify for a medical redshirt. As long as those games happened before half the season is over (so within the first 6 games) and your injury is season ending, so you don't play in essentially games 4-12.

Which is why Lattimore couldn't do it last year or this year, but Shell could do it last year. I also remember Coach Lawing saying he blames himself because he didn't RS Fordham. Burned his RS in 2009 by playing him against SC State, so now he's a senior. Don't know if it was medical or academic, but I think the principle is the same...to try and get 5 yrs out of most players, with the first being used for S&C and learn playbook, ultimately to building quality depth charts.

How they validate the "season-ending" part of the waiver has always been my question, because I can see have teams can use the first 2-3 games of the season as a pre-season for freshmen to see if they are able to contribute immediately or need a season in the program.

How does Alfy compare now to when he was coming out of high school? I remember hearing his name and that he was a big time player that was committed to Alabama but wasn't sure about what he has been doing performance wise while in California. Any updates would be appreciated.

the fact that the top 4 guys in SC and I think 7 out of the top 10 in the State are very keen in going to Carolina in 2014. Locking down the state already for the next cycle is awesome! I cannot wait to see if Wildeman or Blue or Shaq pulls the trigger first. It's great to be a gamecock.

He is a lot bigger now. Whether that is good or bad weight- I don't know. He had a knee injury last year as well.

IMO:
Matt Rolin- We lose a ton of LB depth this year and he's going to be an EE
Larenz Bryant- Playmaker. See above
Brendan Langley- Lockdown corner.
RS FR or JUCO:
Cody Waldrop- I think he's going to take over for TJ next year.
Rico McWilliams- It sucked when he went down for the year. I've had a good feeling about this guy
TJ Gurley- DJ 2.0 if he recovers from the injury all of the way
Kwinton Smith- I think he'll start at the B receiver position next year
Brock Stadnik- could he take a guard spot?
Alfy Hill- I can't wait to see him in garnet and black

WR- Jody Fuller/ Kwinton Smith should make a good impact. Players said Kwinton Smith was the most impressive Freshman WR they have seen before the season started. Spurrier and Spurrier JR have said Fuller looks very good and is physically ready.
Oline- Cody Waldrop- has a mean streak
Dline- Kelsey Griffin- Very strong and athletic for his size (physically ready). Jhaustin Thomas if he qualifies, the man is 6-6 255 and will have a year of JUCO under his belt (very athletic). Alfy Hill will be very good and should replace Taylor, he could even move inside depending on his size after an offseason in the weight room.
LB- Rolin/Bryant will see playing time.
DB- Rico Mcwilliams and TJ Gurley will be studs. Langley can probably come in and earn some PT if he works hard. Could also be a threat on special teams.

Yea I think Waldrop has only worked at G. I expect Harris to take over at C next year
