WIS News: Lattimore recovers from knee surgery

"USC running back Marcus Lattimore is recovering from knee surgery. Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier confirmed Sunday that Lattimore underwent surgery to repair ligaments in his right knee Friday in Birmingham, AL."*

Spurrier said Sunday Lattimore has returned to Columbia and is resting comfortably.

Just a guess, but maybe it was Dr. James Andrews. It seems that his name is brought up every time a professional athlete needs and orthopedic surgeon, he is one of the best in the business.

I have not seen it confirmed, but I am fairly certain he was operated on by Dr. James Andrews.

Dr. Andrews is pretty much the first doctor seen by most MLB pitchers who need Tommy John surgery, if I'm not mistaken:

Dr. Andrews has 2 large clinics. One is in Gulf Breeze, Fl and the other is still in Birmingham, but I understand that he spends most of his time in Florida now. Dr. Guy went to B'ham last year and was part of the surgical team that operated on ML. He did a fellowship with Dr. Andrews some time ago and that is his affiliation with him.

Might be wrong, but I believe each surgery has to last less than 2hrs to prevent the tissue around the knee from swelling.

Andrews generally specializes in shoulders and elbows if I am not mistaken. However, he left Columbus GA's world renowned Hughston Clinic to go to Birmingham to develop another clinic that was similar. Hughston now pales in comparison to Andrew's clinic in Birmingham. The bottom line is that Andrews is the big name, but he probably had nothing to do with the surgery proper other than hiring the doc who did the surgery. Really good orthopedic surgeons specialize in a region. I know for a fact that Andews specializes in upper extremities. Having had an ACL replacement surgery in the past (actually at Hughston), I interviewed a couple of candidates to do my knee. One was a younger, general orth. surgeon. I asked how many he did a year. His reply: 80-90. The guy who wound up doing the surgery specialized in knees. His reply: 350-450 per year. That is the type of guy who did ML's surgery. Also, I would suspect that Dr. Guy scrubbed in on this surgery as well.

You mean that dude averaged over 3 a day?! Take holidays and weekends into effect and you've got a guy doing 3 to 5 of those a day, every day.

possible from a mathmatical standpoint? yes



possible from a logical/realistic viewpoint when considering what the norm is? extremely unlikely and doubtful



now.. if he had a group practice and that was including all of his partners, then maybe.. but I doubt just one surgeon would do that. Unless it were on a purely procedural basis and not a major-surgery basis. I could see that many if he counts scopic-type surgeries. But yeah..


who knows.. maybe the guy's a phenom.. just my opinion.. though I could just be misunderstanding what he said or underestimating a likely number
