Interesting that the surgery was done in Birmingham. Wonder who did it.

Just a guess, but maybe it was Dr. James Andrews. It seems that his name is brought up every time a professional athlete needs and orthopedic surgeon, he is one of the best in the business.

I have not seen it confirmed, but I am fairly certain he was operated on by Dr. James Andrews.

Here is a good article about Dr. Andrews.

Dr. Andrews is pretty much the first doctor seen by most MLB pitchers who need Tommy John surgery, if I'm not mistaken:

Quote:
James Rheuben Andrews (born 1942 in Homer, Louisiana) is an American orthopedic surgeon who practices in Birmingham, Alabama at the Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center. He also practices one day a week at the Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in Gulf Breeze, Florida. Andrews is arguably the most renowned orthopedic surgeon in his profession for knee, elbow, and shoulder injuries.[1][2][3] He has also been credited with performing some of the earliest arthroscopies.[2] Some of the most common procedures performed by Andrews are Tommy John Surgery and the repair of knee damage, and generally he is considered a top specialist in repairing damaged ligaments.

......

Andrews is well known for performing orthopedic surgery on high-profile athletes from a wide array of sports. He created the HealthSouth Sports Medicine Council and was the driving force behind the successful Go For It! Roadshow. He was also an athlete himself, winning a Southeastern Conference Championship in polevaulting at Louisiana State University. Andrews was the subject of an ESPN.com article that praised his talents and listed some of his notable clients. One excerpt from the magazine stated that "[Andrews] is the alpha doc at the center of a sports-medicine network that extends well beyond doctors. Every athletic trainer, physical therapist, strength-and-conditioning coach in the land seems to have Andrews' cell phone number".[4] "As far as I know he's like the Jay-Z of the rap world. He's the best. He's smooth. He's smooth as butter." remarked Kevin Smith, Lions running back, on surgeon Dr. James Andrews who performed his ACL reconstruction.[5] He consulted on Tom Brady after his third knee surgery, Brett Favre with his shoulder surgery,[6] and most recently worked with Albert Pujols surgery on his right elbow. He also did a surgical repair of New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees's throwing shoulder when he sustained a 360 tear of the labrum and additional rotator cuff damage.[7] He has also worked with professional wrestlers such as Shawn Michaels, Triple H, John Cena, Edge and Randy Orton. He also consulted U.S. women's national soccer team goalkeeper Hope Solo on her major shoulder surgery. Andrews serves as the team doctor for Alabama, Auburn, and the NFL's Washington Redskins.[8]
Andrews' patients also include Michael Jordan, Jack Nicklaus, Emmitt Smith, Wyatt Stewart, IV, John Smoltz, Troy Aikman, Charles Barkley, Roger Clemens, Andrei Markov, Bo Jackson, Ryan Broyles, Adrian Peterson, Matthew Ober and Michael Morse among others.[9]
Andrews' career has enjoyed notable press coverage.

Dr. Andrews has 2 large clinics. One is in Gulf Breeze, Fl and the other is still in Birmingham, but I understand that he spends most of his time in Florida now. Dr. Guy went to B'ham last year and was part of the surgical team that operated on ML. He did a fellowship with Dr. Andrews some time ago and that is his affiliation with him.

I wouldn't say many. I believe initial comments said multiple, as in more than one. Many implies more than 3. I could be wrong.

Might be wrong, but I believe each surgery has to last less than 2hrs to prevent the tissue around the knee from swelling.

Andrews generally specializes in shoulders and elbows if I am not mistaken. However, he left Columbus GA's world renowned Hughston Clinic to go to Birmingham to develop another clinic that was similar. Hughston now pales in comparison to Andrew's clinic in Birmingham. The bottom line is that Andrews is the big name, but he probably had nothing to do with the surgery proper other than hiring the doc who did the surgery. Really good orthopedic surgeons specialize in a region. I know for a fact that Andews specializes in upper extremities. Having had an ACL replacement surgery in the past (actually at Hughston), I interviewed a couple of candidates to do my knee. One was a younger, general orth. surgeon. I asked how many he did a year. His reply: 80-90. The guy who wound up doing the surgery specialized in knees. His reply: 350-450 per year. That is the type of guy who did ML's surgery. Also, I would suspect that Dr. Guy scrubbed in on this surgery as well.

You mean that dude averaged over 3 a day?! Take holidays and weekends into effect and you've got a guy doing 3 to 5 of those a day, every day.

Is that even possible?

possible from a mathmatical standpoint? yes

possible from a logical/realistic viewpoint when considering what the norm is? extremely unlikely and doubtful

now.. if he had a group practice and that was including all of his partners, then maybe.. but I doubt just one surgeon would do that. Unless it were on a purely procedural basis and not a major-surgery basis. I could see that many if he counts scopic-type surgeries. But yeah..

who knows.. maybe the guy's a phenom.. just my opinion.. though I could just be misunderstanding what he said or underestimating a likely number
