We can throw hats in the ring all day, but what good will it do our program? I seriously doubt that just "throwing our hat in the ring" gives reason for a prospect that has no interest in us to suddenly have it. IMO, the coaches need to gauge the prospect's interest in their program before they ever go through all that process, which usually includes offering a scholarship. I don't know any of this as a fact, but I'm assuming that the USC coaches have gotten very little to zero feedback from Michel that's he's interested in us, so they are looking elsewhere.....

You make good points and for most recruits I will agree with you. But when you have a "can't miss talent" there's not much evaluation needed. You can look at his film and see what he has consistently done since he was an eighth grader and see this kid is an awesome prospect. This guy lives in another state surrounded by schools he knows. We need to break through the clutter and grab his attention. To me there nothing that's more attention grabbing then saying we want you to attend our university for free and play football for the gamecocks. You also get the secondary publicity that comes from Recruiting news services and their pundits. People will start comparing him to Lattimore and Mike Davis. You create a-lot of buzz and he may develop more curiosity naturally. All of these positive reactions from "Investing in a prospect that shows zero interest". I personally don't mind if the coaches take time to investigate in a talent like his with or without interest. You never know until you try. I admit I know nothing about his character off the football field and being a fit for the university is very important. It just seems like with top 25 talent outside of the state we are a little late to the party.

After leading Broward County in rushing as an eighth-grader with 1,825 yards and 18 touchdowns, Michel has proven he is among the state's best for the class of 2014. Unfortunately, the elusive back missed all but one game of his sophomore year with a knee injury. He will make his junior season debut in a nationally televised game on ESPN on Aug. 25, against Cocoa (Fla.). His highly anticipated return will be watched with great interest as fans, college coaches and recruiting experts all want to know if he has regained his old form.

We have a pretty good one named Derrell Scott, who has shown interest in return, who we have decided to invest the time into. Recruiting time invested in a kid who is not going to come to your program is time you could be spending on kids who want to come to your school. The coaches have lives, families, and have to eat and sleep like the rest of us. They cannot recruit every good looking prospect in the country just because they are good.

Why? They won a national championship and appeared in another since 2000. I know I'd gladly take that from USC and most other programs would too.

I agree but the question was why do people under 30 care about the U, specifically high school athletes. That is the answer to go along with their tradition.

I'm very happy with Derrell Scott for 2014, however I think it's unfair to hold my feet to fire because I posted this message before he was a main target on the radar for 2014. But I do understand your point and have accepted the fact that Sony won't be coming here. To my original point, we have done a much better job with recruiting kids in the top 25 for 2014.

The 5-foot-10.5, 203-pound Michel was on hand Saturday and took part in the workout. He looked to be in tip top shape, as he usually does and zipped through running back drills with quick feet and terrific balance. More than just a threat as a runner, the five-star prospect caught the ball naturally throughout the day. Georgia, Notre Dame, Miami, Florida and Florida State are his current top five.

Michel's production speaks for itself, and he has the measurables and running skill set to rack up impressive yards at the next level. He makes it look effortless at times and can change up his style as needed to move the chains. Has a great blend of size, speed and strength at the position. Overall, he appears durable despite a sophomore season knee injury. Has already shouldered a lot of carries at the high school level but has the thick, multicarry frame that should be able to handle the load in an every-down role in college.
