Byrnes disqualified from playoffs

Nothing official yet. Only tweets from SportsTalk from "sources" about it. Chris Miller was asked about it and it was the first he heard of it. The appeal will be heard tomorrow. Bobby Bentley didn't even know about the meeting. Sounds like this is either hearsay or not anything serious because no one knows anything about it. We'll see what happens.

And Byrnes/SV will face Spartanburg next week, not BSHS.

That's awful. Didn't D.W Daniel have a similar issue that forced them to forfeit a game earlier this year?

I always hate to see young athletes penalized for what is usually a coaching oversight.

It appears the player was on the JV team and did dress out for varsity games, but never played a down for the varsity team. Doesn't look good for the Rebels though :(

I'm sure that would be taken into account. If he had no effect on the outcome of the games then no punishment should be that severe.

pretty sure that it doesn't matter if he took a snap or not, if he dressed it is against the rules.

there was some school around Charleston (I think it was West Ashley) who was stripped of a state title in girls soccer because they had an 8th grader dress (not play) for the state championship game (in soccer, like football 8th graders can't play at the varsity level) a few years ago. I believe they appealed the ruling but I don't remember what the outcome was.

and considering the fact that Lower Richland just got disqualified from the playoffs for an ineligible player (don't know exactly what the situation was there) I don't think that the SCHSL will be able to go easy on Byrnes without appearing to be biased (although that has never stopped them before so who knows).

I believe it was Boiling Springs that had to forfeit their season because they had an ineligible player that never even dressed for their games...he would only be at practice...

This committee member said the 4A bracket "could change" as a result of this meeting. The source was told this concerns a player who played in Byrnes' final regular season game. Byrnes AD Bobby Bentley said tonight the school has not been made aware of any meeting Saturday. To clarify an earlier tweet, it is premature to say Byrnes has been disqualified. Saturday's meeting apparently is to determine if there's been an infraction and if any penalty is warranted.

They're could be done. My daughter played JV softball as a 7th grader and at the end of their JV season, the varsity coach moved her and another player up to the varsity for the playoffs to reward them for a great season. They did not play in the playoff games, and they were not allowed a jersey. Coach said if they wore a jersey, she would have to list them on the official game roster, which would have resulted in a violation of their eligibility requirements.

I know back in the 80s, several of us were moved up from JV to the varsity football team after the JV season was over. I don't think it was a violation to do that back then. Either that, or our coach was a cheatin bastage, which would not surprise me in the least.

BTW, I'm in Spartanburg for the weekend and it kind of surprised me that the Byrnes/Spring Valley football game was on FM radio. Hell, we can't even get the Gamecocks on FM radio down in the Lowcountry.

At least in this scenario, both teams know that there is a situation 6 days before the game, so both teams can practice and prepare for the game against Spartan High, although it does create a sticky situation for Spartan High, as they don't know who they will play, but they should know early on this week.

Last week, Blue Ridge was defeated by Lower Richland, but Lower Richland was Disqualified from the playoffs Thursday Night, and BR had to play Daniel the next night. Not a very good situation, and they had no time to practice. I feel like the game should have been pushed to Monday, which is what would happen in the event of a weather delay.

Dylan Thompson missed playoffs his senior year at boiling springs for this. Not sure yet our issue is the same as Boiling Springs that year but their issue was a preseason violation. 8th grader practiced with BS varsity team.

They're not disqualified and will stay in the play offs. Ruling was today. They forfeit Dorman game from regular season which would have affected seeding.

Wait, Why is it illegal for a jE player to play varsity, seems like when I was in school you could play at the varsity level regardless of how old you were, if you were good enough.
