Michael Carrera named SEC Freshman of the Week...

South Carolina’s Michael Carrera, a 6-foot-5, 212-pound freshman forward from Anzoátegui, Venezuela, was named SEC Freshman of the Week after scoring 17 points and gathering 15 rebounds in a win over Milwaukee.The high-energy forward shot 50 percent for the game, and hit a perfect 5-of-5 attempts from the free throw line. Carrera had a near double-double with nine points and nine rebounds at halftime, and quickly claimed the double-double in the second half. He was instrumental in the overtime period as well, hitting two free throws early in the five-minute session to give the Gamecocks the lead for good. The win marked the first for Frank Martin as head coach of the Gamecocks.

I think Frank said he has a 7'2" wingspan which explains it. He can also jump.

The energy and fire he plays with are contagious. He goes 100% at all times and even on the bench he was trying to fire up the crowd. I know he has only played one collegiate game, but he is already one of my favorite players on the team.

Yes, he was over on the bench trying to get the crowd fired up, which was awesome for a freshman.

Carrera has already taken ownership of the team, it seems. I don't know if he's considered a leader in the locker room but if not, it won't take long. He definitely seems passionate about competing. He and Lakeem should get along well - they're similar all-out type of players. Time will tell if his passion can be used against him in tense game situations. Regardless, I think he has a remarkable career ahead of him.

I think he's a better version of Anthony Gill. Think Gill was a better shooter but he got destroyed in the paint.

Gill had that silky smooth mid range shot from the elbow and that was about it. I think Coach Martin can work with Carrera to develop that.

Love everything about Carrera but that size will limit him in the SEC.

His effort, athleticism, length and rebounding even things out. The guy can guard multiple positions and is just a ball of energy.

Gamecock fans are going to love him. He'll be kind of like what Renaldo Balkman was for so man years, or think about what a Shawn Marion did/does. This is what the Gamecocks have been missing for so many years. A guy who does all the little things, isn't afraid to mix it up inside and whos play/motor is so infectious that it inspires a team.
