The history and tradition of Tigerburn is one that dates back to when the Gamecock mascot made its first appearance in 1902. In that first season as the Gamecocks, Carolina defeated a highly favored Clemson 12-6. But it was the full-scale riot that broke out in the wake of the game that’s remembered most.

Reports suggest that the Carolina fans that week were carrying around a poster with the image of a tiger with a gamecock standing on top of it, holding the tiger’s tail as if he was steering the tiger by the tail. Naturally, the Clemson fans didn’t take too kindly to that. After the game on Thursday, the Clemson team told the Carolina students that ‘if you bring this poster, which is insulting to us, to the big parade on Friday, you’re going to be in trouble.’ And of course, the Carolina students brought the poster to the parade.
As expected, a brawl broke out before both sides agreed to mutually burn the poster in an effort to diffuse tensions. The Carolina-Clemson game has been played every year since, and every year, each school burns an object that represents the other. This year’s tiger will be built by the student group, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and reach heights of nearly 30 feet. Tigerburn will be held at the Greene Street Intramural Fields in the 700 block of Greene Street (corner of Greene and Gadsden Streets).

As I sit in my office, I look at the wall directly in front of me and there is a picture of a tiger with "clemson" written on it and its tail is between his leg. Purched on top is a USC cock with a whip.
