Kentucky is very good for the SEC.

They give us a national presence in basketball and allow us to have a perenial poor team in football.

Maryland had to cut a bunch of sports last year.
This is a great move for them.

They'll make more money and attract more recruits in a pretty talented area.
They'll be competitive in time, unless Edsall keeps running players off the team.

I've heard there are rumors the ACC is looking to replace Maryland ASAP. Right now the front runner is Byrnes, but there are concerns that if Byrnes were brought into the league no one else would sniff the conference title. Sorry, but I couldn't resist.

On a serious note: Does ND having success this year just make it even less likely they will join the ACC as a full member? I think they just duped the ACC like crazy anyway, so I don't think they will ever entertained joining completely anyway.

ND will never join a conference unless the NCAA makes them.

But that's the only way the ACC could be saved.

Has anyone heard WHY Maryland left the ACC? The guy on ESPN said it was because of Duke and UNC, but didn't offer any additional details. It sounds like they may have left for reasons similar to Carolina.

Their atheltic program just recently cut a bunch of teams and the ACCs tv deal was not going to help.
They were saying that going to a bowl game (because always a small bowl) cost them money.

Yes it delays it for a long time because I believe their TV contract comes up for renewal in the next couple of years. A crappy contract due to lack of relevance in football would be what would puch them into a conference, now it seems they'll get at least one more good deal.

They left because they will get a lot more money in the Big 10. They were struggling financially with the ACC's payout.

I think it was either the AD or a Board member, but when asked why he just flat out said because the money is greater.

The president, he cited academics too but said the main reason was that no other president or AD will be forced with cutting programs. I never understand the academics part. I know the IVYs are an athletic conference of mostly good schools, but I mean if Duke lets 100 dumbasses in to play the foolsball does it make the school worse than it is?
