The "3rd and long" and other negative statements are just way off base. During his entire tenure, we had horrible offenses and yet our defenses ranked in the top 3 in the SEC consistently. Over and over (mainly with Skip Holtz as OC) we went 3 and out in the 2nd half, watched our defense get worn down, and many times give up first downs on 3rd and long. Strong went to another school (that I don't like) and had some successes and a few problems, but built a solid defense.

I personally want James Franklin. What he has done so far at Vanderbilt is outstanding. But I fear that he won't be at vandy long enough for us to get him, some big name school will come calling before we do.

As mentioned on the previous page, I like Bob Stoops, the age and timing could be right. He is 52 years old at present, has a great history with SOS, and let him bring in Kliff Klingsbury as the OC. Brilliant!

He's done an amazing job at Louisville, and he can recruit with the best of them. I'd love to have him as a successor to Spurrier, he'd probably be my top realistic option, but that being said, I think he'll take a higher profile gig by the time we go searching for a new head coach.

How did averaging 27th in scoring D over 4 years while coupled with an offense that averaged 91st let us down? That included a 1999 season when the offense gave up so much short field plus points that we ranked 58th in scoring defense but 20th in total D! Lou kept giving his son raises while the D led us to 2 bowl games despite being on the field all year long. We were terrible in the second half all year because our offense was completely shut down and our defense wasn't deep enough to not get completely gassed - plus Holtz kept putting failed offensive players on D in positions that required experience.

Agree...and I might add we had some conditioning issues in those days as well. People seem to forget we almost let OSU come back in that 2nd bowl game & beat us after going up 28-0....that was poor conditioning.
The "Charlie 3rd and long" thing has become an urban legend. Charlie did not have the quality pass rushers we now have and some of those teams did the same thing to us UTen just did a few weeks back...or Arky did to us the previous few years....don't see anyone calling EJ or Whammy 3rd and long. You don't get pressure on most QBs, they will kill you....we better get some pressure on Sat. nite or it will be a long game.

I'm glad Charlie is proving himself as a HBC and would love to see him considered here...just think he may be out of the picture by the time we come looking.

my top candidates as of TODAY (assuming something horrible happened) are:

1. Jon Gruden - Long shot as we all know. One of Spurriers BFF's as we all know.

2. David Shaw, Stanford - Idk if he would come to the east coast and idk if he has any southern ties for recruiting. He's know for hard nosed defensive teams though.

3. Kirby Smart - Guy is the cornerstone at Alabama right now across from Saban. Southern ties, defensive minded, would be a great fit.

4. Lorenzo Ward - Guy is a heck of a recruiter and he knows what he's doing. I think he could get some outstanding coordinators as well.

5. Bob Stoops - Oklahoma wont put up with 2-3 losses every season right on and on and Stoops has southern ties (Spurrier) and his wife if from SC or Georgia.

To me the third and long is just what we remember because the constant strain our defense was other given our crap offense and the fact that we were actually competitive for the first time in about a decade so the first down conversions really stuck out. He was carrying us though, we saw what happened after he left, we gave up lots of third and shorts.
