I have said it many times Eric that the importance of Vince Dooley on our athletics dept may never be fully appreciated. Without him I dont know if we are in the SEC... Some say we would have been asked eventually because were independent and it just made sense but he really pushed for us. We also need to thank Bobby Bowden for being a dumbass and looking for the easy way out.

I would contend that SC would have ended up in the SEC or B12 anyways if FSU took the bid in 92. SC would have ended up in the Big East and would have been poached in 2003 by either the SEC or B12. Revisionist history at its best...

Didn't Vince recommend South Carolina because he strongly didn't want Clemson to be the choice after FSU declined? If Clemson had accepted then you all wouldn't have ever gotten into the SEC. (I don't see the Big 12 either because until this year they've been very regionalized).
So you would have had to go back to ACC or Big East. Correct me if I am wrong here. |

I don't know exactly why Vince recommended us, other than UGA played us every year, and he knew our fans and our passion. I would like to think it is on our merrits, and not because he didn't want some other school that was not being considered at the time. Miami was being considered, and Vince spoke favorably about us. If you look at press clippings at the time, USC announced for the SEC and UM for the Big East at the same time.

Supposedly the Big 10 talked to at least two other ACC schools as well as Maryland, implication is that they approached UVA and UNC to start a discussion. Nothing has been announced obviously, but a lot might hinge on the efficacy of their exit fee, of course 50 million ain't alot when you're talking about $10 million plus per annum in increased revenues even under the worst case projections.

That's what the guy from ACC sportsjournal was saying, as a possible scenario. Didn't mention a thing about clemson though.

Also, re our admission you have to remember that the SEC needed another team to have the championship game, further the payouts from the ACC and SEC were probably around the same or larger from the ACC because hoops commanded more money back then. There's a reason FSU told them to go stuff it. It was a mutually beneficial arrangement. The SEC had not yet staged the successful championship game at that point. That was what really started to differentiate the league. All that money from that huge game that was just the leagues property.

North Carolina runs the ACC... They are not going to leave a league that they control.
