So, any student who has special needs and requires more than the standard 4 years to complete high school should be barred from athletics?

And it not a matter of discrimination....it is a matter of that they have violated a federal statute that was put in place to protect people with disabilities.

Sorry, I got to say let GC play out. If after the season it gets worked out where GC is ineligible then give the trophy to the runner up.

Just to be clear. Goose Creek did not file. The ACLU did on behalf of John Doe. His rights were violated when he was in the group home in Greenville County.

Federal law trumps schsl law.

Has nothing to do with the group home in Greenville. This is aimed directly at the SCHSL.

From what ive been told, and this is coming from coaches in the know of the situation who I know personally, the coach allowed him to stay on the team because of his "home situation". Playing football kept the kid out of trouble. Kid needed football.

He had a fifth year of high school BECAUSE he is special. He did not attend a high school in the 1st of the 5 years. He was homeschooled. They finally got it right with the disability discrimination. It's wrong and they should be allowed to play. Don't punish all of those kids for something that NOBODY knew about. People were only trying to do the RIGHT thing and allow this kid to be on the team even though he DID NOT contribute... Someone said "think Radio".. and yes that's exactly it. This is disturbing and sad. It represents everything that is wrong with youth sports. It's never about the kids anymore.

Robert Quinn had no interest attending Clemson or USC when SCHSL made Fort D forfeit all their games in 2007, which he felt was unjust.

I know the players at GC are hurting. They didn't do anything wrong, yet the team was basically given a death sentence. Don't be surprised if Gerald Turner does not play in the Shrine Bowl, and Jalen Stevens and Mke Myers skip the North/South. Gerald may even open his recruiting and decide to get the hell out SC.

Carlos Dunlap went to Florida cus of his ma, not because of the Shrine Bowl. Robert Quinn said before his senior year that he wanted to go out of state so the SCHSL had no impact on his college choice.

I attended the last hearing in Cola, as well as the final press conference at Goose Creek.

Mr John Doe and his mother was in attendance at the last schsl hearing.

After another unfavorable ruling, the ACLU informed Mr John Doe and his mother that upon the evidence, he should be eligible to play under the
Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which prevents public agencies from discriminating against people with disabilities.

ACLU did the preparation and filed for an emergeny injuction with the U.S. District Court. Jason Moss, attorney, offered representation.

Yes, we all know the suit is aimed directly at the SCHSL.

The SCHSL ruled his eligibilty clock started in 2008 when he was placed in the group home. Even though he was not able to leave or participate in sports, the schsl maintained the stance his eligibility clock started at the group home because Woodmont teachers went to the group home to teach.

Goose Creek said the schsl rules states a student's eligibilty clock starts when a student steps on a campus. They maintained that Jon Doe did not officially step on a school campus until 2010.

Little more detailed, but the point I am making is the problem stems from the parties at a disagreement as to when his eligibilty clock starts. I never said Jon Doe was taking the group home to court. Merely suggesting this is where the problem lies.

ACLU informed John Doe his rights were being denied. Do you think John Doe came up with this on his own?

Moss and Associates offered representation. Why, I don't know. They specialize in bankruptcy cases. Publicity?

Do you really think Moss and Associates were able to get the U.S. District Court to hear this case in one day, or the ACLU? It takes weeks, sometimes months to schedule a hearing in federal court.

Then please tell me why a 5 Star recruit, the #1 player in South Carolina was not selected for the Shrine Bowl?

And why would Robert Quinn make the statement he would rather play out of state?

Every Division I football player from Fort Dorchester HS (that I recall), has opted to play out of state, except one. Byron Maxwell blew his ACL out in high school, and Clemson still honored their initial offer, so he became a Tiger.

Fort D has had their run ins with the SCHSL. They self reported an ineligible player in 2007 on a clerical error, stripped of their wins, and felt the were treated unjustly by the schsl.

If you don't think the schsl does not have any influence on the landscape of high school football, its political views and their stance towards some high school coaches, and players, you are sadly misinformed.

Carlos Dunlap not being selected for the Shrine Bowl was strictly political. There is no sound justification to omitting the #1 ranked player in SC. This left a bitter taste in his mouth about the state of SC because of the way he was treated. I'm sure Robert Quinn witnessed all of this and I'm sure this influenced him to play out of state.
