Black friday and all.
I work for Wal-Mart and Sam Walton would have hated this idea. I am a young person... but this shit is too much. I worked tonight well.. today. 3pm to 12am(midnight) It is just too much. I missed Thanksgiving dinner, time with my wife an kids.. let alone telling my mother Im sorry I could not make it back to Columbia in time. IT is just too much. |

Hate that you missed it. This is why those without kids and wives should be willing to step up and take one for the team. I missed some good food myself and haven't even gotten any cool stuff to work on. But, keep in mind, there are those who are serving oversees who haven't seen their families in months. Stuff like that helps me, at least, keep things in perspective. Enjoy the rest of your time off. And if anyone you know gets stabbed or beaten badly, send them to my ER. I'm bored outta my mind!

Were you not allowed to ask off? What does your store do if someone is going to be out of town over Thanksgiving...fire them?
That's the risk of retail. I used to work in the service industry and knew that, while working in a restaurant, I would constantly be at risk of having to work on holidays. I no longer work in the service industry. |

Every firefighter, EMT, hospital worker, and first responder knows what you mean. I do as well. It is tough working holidays.

And thank god for them. I returned home yesterday from thanksgiving dinner and the woods was on fire beside my house and burning into my yard, i was able to get the leaves and stuff out in my yard with a shovel but had to call the fire department to get the woods out.

I feel you, man. I'm a part-time firefighter and used to work security in college. I've worked my fair share of July Fourths, Thanksgivings, and Christmases. With a couple security Black Fridays thrown in. It's not any fun at all. A lot of people take time with their families and loved ones for granted. You realize how much those couple hours mean after you miss a few big holidays. It makes you really feel for the troops and their families.
And I agree with the poster above. The main reason I've worked big holidays so much is because I'm in my early 20's, single, and not a parent. Take 2 years ago: I'm not gonna sit by and take a day off when I know that a guy in his 30's with a wife has to spend Christmas away from her as well as miss his daughter's first Christmas. There needs to be more people that are willing to do that. |

Be thankful that you got a job 23 million plus Americans are out of work. 7 years ago I missed my little sister's wedding because of the military.

It still sucks that our retail outlets are forcing people to work more and more hours on holidays.
I guess, much like first responders, that if you take that job you realize it's part of the package.

While I feel for the folks who have to work on major holidays, I'm grateful as well. My son has strep right now, and his temperature will jump up to around 103 without medication. I didn't notice he was running low on the medicine until I was literally dispensing the last dose (I know, I should've realized it before then). So the fact Wal-Mart was open and had the medicine made me happy. I'm just glad I got there before all the craziness started.

Although, to be honest, working at Wal Mart sucks cat balls compared to a career as an EMT or firefighter.
If I worked at Wal Mart, I'd be racking people in the jaw all day. |

I understand that it sucks but, when you take certain jobs you know that working Holidays is a real expectation. When I worked in restaurants I new that working Easter, July 4, New Years eve and day along with many other holidays were a real possibility. I decided I didn't wanna do that anymore so I took steps to make sure I was more employable by industries that have better schedules. Trust me I've been there and it sucks.

That is one of the funniest things I have heard all week. Thanks for posting that video. I bet that one women's husband went up there and beat someones ass.

spent 4 years working Black Fridays without a choice at Lowes. they blacked out holidays for vacation requests, and if you missed BF you got written up. Literally EVERY employee worked that day whether they liked it or not. Getting to a home improvement store at 4am to set up and prep for a sale where the best deal is on a shopvac... it's retarded. Not to mention people actually lined up at the door to get in. Damn cheap jerkoffs.

Pretty soon Thanksgiving will be Black Thanksgiving -- a holiday when Americans will give thanks for bargain prices.

Meh, single people have holidays also. I have thanksgiving off but will be working christmas and new year's. That's how it works. Should people with families get every holiday off while singles work every holiday? I don't think so.
