It has been like this every time a good passing quarterback lines up behind center for us. I've been preaching for a long time that the QB holds the keys to the skill plays success. When the QB gives Bubba's guys a chance, they produce. Period.

Exactly my point....Connor has already showed us the fun & gun against bad D's...it's not like Dylan did anything Connor hasn't done

I think you and I have discussed (and agreed on) this before, but that's what is frustrating about Spurrier's playcalling when Shaw is in at QB. He just calls the game differently. Because of the incredible difference in playcalling depending on which QB is in, we REALLY need to find a true dual threat QB. It's pretty obvious at this point that Shaw is the "running" QB and Thompson is the "passing" QB, and that both can do a little of the other, but I think Spurrier needs to be consistent with his playcalling.

I liked all of the plays called except for the short rollouts. I remember 5 or 6 times, mostly to the right, but DT never looked comfortable and completed maybe one of them. That type of play is one designed for CS where he can take off if coverage dictates. Other than that, masterful!

Had to call a different game with the two different qb's. There were throws Dylan made last night that Connor just doesnt have the arm to make.

Ace Sanders, Bruce Ellington, Damiere (if we throw him enough long balls, he'll eventually catch one), Busta, Jarrell, Shaq... I think we got this! What people overlook from last night is that yes, Dylan did get pass protection, but not all the time. When the pocket collapsed, on several occassions he knew just how far to step up and he released that puppy a split second before getting hit. That's the kind of pocket presense you need for an aerial bombardment attack. People, Steve Spurrier designed the most potent aerial attack in the history of college football and it wasn't a one-hit wonder like Cam Newton's Auburn Tigers. (hey, Gene... time to dust off the old resume) If Coach believes he now has the tools to implement the true Fun 'n Gun, expect Ace Sanders and Bruce Ellington to be names that easily surpass Sammy "Potkins" and Nuk "Dud" Hopkins. We finally saw last night what happens when you throw to Ace and Bruce as they get separation. Seriously, they are poised to tear it up, and if they do, expect the Gamecocks to start averaging about 45+ points per game. Glory, Hallelujah! ![]()

All our coaches called a good game. Very well coached. I don't think I've ever heard 2 teams say "rhythm" so much. Watch our Wards post game, several of our D players and all their post game interviews. Everyone mentioned rhythm being so important for clemson and they had zero after the 1st qtr. Our O game plan as well as the defensive strategy to challenge their WRs at the line and pressure the QB caused clemson fits in this game. Props to Spurrier for calling a great game for DT but also to our D coaches to changing things up, adapting and making the adjustments to stop clemson after the 1st qtr.
Edit: Go back and watch Venebales post game. He basically admits to being out coached in this game towards the end of his interview. |

His playcalling looked brilliant because he actually had a quarterback that would stay in the pocket, see the whole field, throw it more than 15 yards and use all the tools in the toolbox.
You could tell that Coach was like a kid in a candy store. He was even sprinting down the sideline on one occasion.

Definitely need to see more I-formation. Especially if Dylan is at QB. The guy made some plays, but I think we can all agree he's not incredibly well suited to run the zone read 20 times a game.
But was absolutely awesome to see the ball going deep down the middle of the field. The pass to Nick and the TD to Ace were the types of plays we've been waiting all season to see. |

Yes, but would this work against Florida or LSU? It's a valid question.
Speculation: I think Dylan has some nice zip on the ball, but a slightly better arm and it works against the best defenses too. And as long as our tackles can become more consistent. If they both get slightly quicker feet, look out! Connor would be available if it isn't working. But Spurrier needs to recognize it by halftime and make the switch. At least we have something to build on.

If there is anybody who still thinks Spurrier doesn't care about the rivalry game with Clemson they should've heard him in his post game show this morning. He was so hoarse from hollering he could hardly talk!!!

The playcalling looked the same to me, just executed at a higher level than I'm accustomed to seeing.

That game stands out for me because we nearly beat an unstoppable FL team with a team that was not nearly as talented. Talent-wise against Clemson, I felt we were at least equal to, if not superior than Clemson.

DT did it on the road in a very hostile environment, and we have played poor on the road until last night. It's great to have two solid qb's!

Dylan played good. I wish the nose of the football would die on him so much on the sideline passes, if this doesnt happens he hits at least 6 more completions

You have never seen Connor shaw throw a back shoulder pass. In fact DT made throws last night that Connor hasn't even tried to make. DT threw a two perfect prefect passes to justice where he threw the ball in a narrow hole between two defenders that was dropped. |
