I never said Coach is giving up on Eric. Ellington, if he plays basketball, will primarily be a point guard, which is the position Smith plays. They will compete for playing time. With Williams and Page to play the 2G, I doubt if Bruce will get many of their minutes. We might play 3 guards some, in which case Bruce could get some of the minutes now going to BRich and Leonard.

I don't think that that's a necessarily fair thing to say about Eric....the roles are different - playing point as opposed to playing the 2 guard. Where Eric has struggled to any degree IMO has been his 3-pt shooting: minus his 1-7 production behind the arc thus far, and he's got a 47% completion percentage. He's averaging 10 ppg at this point, and has to handle the role of bringing the ball up against presses and get the offense set up. IMO if he either improves on his accuracy from the outside or limit his attempts, his efficiency will improve a bit.

Just because a #2 is scoring more points doesn't mean he would make a better #1...

Right now Smith is the only true point guard on the team. When Ellington comes back we will have two options at the point. Watching Smith last night he seemed to be getting gassed. It will be nice to have another point guard to take some minutes to keep everyone fresh.

On Carolina Calls, Martin said that he, Bruce, and Spurrier discussed his return to basketball. Said that Bruce wants to play and they are all going to meet again, possibly tomorrow to get the details straightened out. He said that Bruce might practice/play some before bowl practices start, but that Bruce had unfinished business with the football team and would return to them as soon as bowl practice starts.

We need Bruce badly, Eric Smith struggles getting the ball up the court. Bruce's handle and speed make him an instant press breaker. He needs to distribute though because I would bet his shot will be pretty rusty. I think he immediately becomes our best option at point the second he walks on the floor honestly.

Martin had said earlier Ellington would not return until after the football team was completely finished. But the first-year Gamecocks hoops coach says Ellington and Steve Spurrier convinced him the junior point guard could handle the load.
