It changed when Gillmore, Holloman and the rest of the 2009 class picked USC

I think it changed when we hired Brad Lawing and he said his goal was to change the DNA. It took a few years to get the players here but our dline is the staple of our program. The depth, the talent, the "projects" that he has made into elite players(and credit to those players for buying in), and the extremely high success rate his players show year after year. Most schools weren't even offering guys like Devin Taylor or Eric Norwood. Byron Jerideau would be another guy that wasn't highly recruited but has had a big impact this year. Then he has brought in highly recruited players too. Clowney, Matthews, Quarles, Robertson, etc. They've almost all panned out. That's actually pretty tough to do. Melvin Ingram was a LB. Turned him into a freak on the dline and a 1st round draft pick(again, credit to Melvin for buying in and putting in the work). This is the HUGE difference at USC.
If the oline ever gets close to the level of our dline we will be in business as far as challenging in the SEC. Right now we've got 1 player that has been here longer than 3 years on the oline. As that changes we're going to get better and better. That said I still love this highlight video from 2009 the most of all the ones over the past several years of victories over Clemson.

When you guys started getting solid defensive players. The offense does enough to score points and when they dont do well you can still win a 16-13 game or shut a team down in the 2nd half offensively (UK/Clemson)

I think UConn was supposed to win their bowl game that year. That was the year one of their players was stabbed to death (if I remember correctly) and they carried his jersey to every one of their remaining games that year. That win was for him.

The 2009 game was the best for me. I took my daughter, it was her first Gamecock/Clemson game and it was an awesome bonding experience for us. Just like the 1984 game was an great bonding experience for my Dad and I. Thank you 2009 South Carolina Gamecock football team!

And stupid mistakes by us. Fumbles, dropped pick that could have been taken to the house. We beat ourselves that game. Yes and cold, UConn used to playing in that crap.

Garcia was paid to lose all his bowl games. Thought that was common knowledge?

It all changed when Spurrier let Dabo win to get his job, setting up Clemson's downfall because he knew Dabo was an ass clown who he could school year in and year out.

I think it all changed at clem in 2008 when Spurrier lost and Ron loved the fact that we lost. Coach said, "what do u want me to do Ron? We gotta get us some big time ball players!" Done deal from that point.

But if you have to choose one defining moment of when things changed, it is when Steve Orr Spurrier signed the first contract. It just took him a while to get the right players, coaches, and facilities. He's still in the process of achieving his ultimate goal(s). |
