Made you look!
Seriously, with Maryland bailing to the Big 10 and strong rumors circulating that Virginia wants out, the ACC is imploding before our eyes. What two teams would be more attractive to bolster the SEC than Clemson and Fla. State and would benefit more from a conference switch? What is troubling is that I don't see the SEC protecting USC or UF because Clemson and Fla. St. are in-state schools. Alabama has UA and Auburn, Tennesee has UT and Vanderbilt, and Mississippi has MSU and Ole Miss. It doesn't lack precedent. It would be a real coup for the SEC (better than A&M and Mizzou, in some respects), and it seems like a good fit. The only negative is the relatively small population base of Tallahasse and Clemson, but the Seminoles and Tigers have big regional support. Big TV dollars. I bet in five years we will be playing one or both of them in the SEC east. If I'm the Clemson or Fla. St. AD, I am lobbying my butt off for a conference switch. |

Neither will ever be offered due to TV. This article sums it up nicely...

The schools in the same state that you mentioned was looooooong before tv dollars started. The game has changed now. No way clemson gets in. There is no tv market they add. Adding nc state would bring in the whole state of NC. Then, bringing in Virginia Tech would bring in Virginia, and some of the DC market. FSU may have a shot, just because they are national. Clemson isn't that big. They bring 0 to the table.

I don't see Clemson or FSU being a bigger coup for the SEC than Texas A&M was. Getting A&M to the SEC was huge. And it wouldn't be just protecting USC and UF, although I think UF has a lot of say in the conference. I heard somewhere that UGA, USC, UK, and UF have a sort of running agree to block expansions into their respective states.

Slive has gone on record stating that the SEC will NOT consider Universities that do not add to the footprint, as in geographical area for TV viewers, of the SEC. FSU and Clemsux do NOT add to the geographical footprint of the SEC, whereas NCSU and VT do (as does OK). Expansion is ALL about adding money via TV contracts and the future SEC Network, not looking at schools that put football above all else or cultural fits.

Good grief, I hope not! The conference is getting too big.

Basically the divisions are going to become the conference with the other side just providing almost out of conference scheduling.

The SEC is going to expand into North Carolina, and the Midwest.
