The Swearinger Effect

Good read (and free!) - I'm certainly gong to miss him!
(searched but didn't find - SIAP!)

When safety D.J. Swearinger signed with South Carolina four years ago, he made a vow that the Gamecocks wouldn’t lose to the Clemson Tigers a single time during his career. At the time, South Carolina had lost six of their last seven games against their rivals and there were few signs that Swearinger could fulfill his promise. However, he did just that and he accomplished it the old fashioned way through hard work and leadership.

love how they talked about the strength and conditioning coaches having to slow him down during the off season.

will definitely be missed and is a legend here.

I have to shake my head at the Clemson fans calling his hit on AE "dirty".

I dislike, and have disliked Clemson for the better part of my 51 years on Earth.

To be fair, I have grudgingly admired their team before. Particularly under Ford, they played tough, had a hard hitting defense, and had the ability to burn the clock and keep your offense off of the field. I would cringe at losses to them, blaming the refs as much as possible for the final score.

My, oh my, how things have turned around. Now, they're the ones crying about a hard hit. Danny Ford is probably embarrassed to still live up there hearing that crap. They blame the refs, they blame hard hits, and they cry because our offense kept them off of the field.

Karma is muy delicioso....

Gonna miss him too. I doubt there's a more passionate, intense, hardworking player in college football. Probably one of my favorite gamecocks of all time.

Huge void next season to fill...and I don't think one guy can fill it.
Not just his intensity and swagger he brought to the defense, but people forget how polished a DB he is.

Huge loss, but someone will have to step up, and I have a good feeling about T.J. Gurley.

I have no doubt that DJs hits across the middle, whether flagged or not, have strengthened this defense greatly. Several clempsen passes were dropped and how many during the season ? His presence is felt with just a stare.

One interesting aspect of DJ's career here is that he is just the latest in what has become a string of extreme DB's. It seems every year for the past four or five years we have had a guy in the defensive backfield that would just flat out lay the wood on people. Big hits are now expected from this group. Who will be the next "hit man"? I'm sure someone will step up because now, it's tradition. :)

Awesome article. Never remembered him as a Ut guy early on but he's exactly the type of player that helped make us better and the same type that clemmons and UT are lacking on D - making them weaker.
