I think this is a good reward and well deserved, but it really shows the craziness of the NCAA.

During the summer didn't SOS say that we should give football players a couple of hundred dollars a game stipend to help them with transportation to get their Mom to the game or to take their girl friend out to dinner? NCAA types and others said that would be terrible and ruin the integrity of the game.

But bowl game gift cards are cool. What's the difference?

I'm pretty sure the players get a lot more than what they're showing. My best friend walked on to NC State's football team and he got a lot more than what's listed above in the Belk Bowl last year.

The article says that schools and conferences can each award up to an extra $400 in gifts. I'll assume that $800 is where his extra stuff came from.

I guess the difference is that every team begins the season with an equal opportunity to make it to a bowl game, and there are strict limits in place on how much the gifts bowls/schools/conferences give can be worth. Also, every player on the team receives the same gifts. This is a lot different, and much easier to police, than a 2* player just getting recruited and getting a normal scholarship, and a 5* player basically being on auction to the school with the richest booster.

Ok I reread your post and realized what I said has nothing to do with what you said. Carry on.

I guess it comes down to some athletic departments having bigger budgets than others, making some able to afford to pay players a stipend and some not. Perhaps the NCAA is also afraid if they open a door to schools giving players money it will be easier to give extra benefits undetected.
