I didn't see a thread on this yet, so...

The Heisman usually goes to the most hyped player of the year instead of the best all around player, and I think this year is no exception, especially with Manti Te'o being a finalist.

NEW YORK -- Johnny Manziel and Manti Te'o are in position to make Heisman Trophy history.

Manziel, the redshirt freshman quarterback from Texas A&M, and Te'o, Notre Dame's star linebacker, along with Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein, were invited Monday to attend the Heisman presentation ceremony.

Te'o has a cute "story", Manziel actually has talent.

Both are incredibly hyped.

I say it's a toss up at the moment, although I truly hope Manziel wins.

I think Manziel is the best offensive player in the country.

I don't even think Te'o is the best Def player in the country. I think Clowney is. Klein is great but I think players like Barner and Ball are better.

Basically this award has just turned into who ESPN hypes up the most.

If Bama beat A&M, Manziel wouldn't be in NY even though he still would have posted the numbers he did, and McCarron would have gone. It is all about the hype. Manziel was shutdown by LSU and UF (first game I know) if those games were later in the season we also wouldn't be talking about him. Teo has been a solid player who has largely contributed to his team this season. And yes, he probably is one of the top players in CFB. However the Heisman is owned by running backs and quarter backs, so it will go to Manziel.

But plane and simple...The only reason Te'o is in this discussion is:

A: Family Tragedy
B: He has a "ND" on his jersey.

ESPN has hyped him all year, while ignoring the fact that apart from Stanford and Oklahoma the have played an weak schedule, that they somehow managed to win out (Curse you Pitt!!!)

I am hoping that Alabama just grinds them into submission.

^exactly. Te'o IS one of the best players in the nation. He IS NOT The best player though. Manziel wins by default since he's a qb.

Te'o is a nice story but he is NOT the best player in the country. He doesn't do enough. He makes tackles and many of his INTs have been the result of a tipped ball or ball that bounced up and he dove and caught it. He didn't even create some of the INTs he has. Right place, right time.

I have all the restpect in the world for Te'o. There needs to be more college football players like him. He is not the best player.

On June 29, 2012, before he was chosen as Texas A&M's starting quarterback and before his first college game, Manziel was arrested and charged with three misdemeanors -- disorderly conduct, failure to identify, and possession of a fictitious driver's license. These charges stemmed from a late-night fight in College Station, Texas.

I do wonder if the Heisman voters are affected by this.

Mater- didn't think I was being dogged. I agree that his family tragedy plays a large part because it makes it a feel good story. Add that to the resurgence of one of the most storied football programs in CFB, and you have what ESPN loves- hype.

No one heard about Manziel's off field issues that much because he was a frosh and probably was blown over by the blitz of his hype.

The Heisman has not been about the most outstanding player in CFB for quite some time. As I said, it is about hype and numbers. Sure on paper you look good, but numbers are only part of the story. The reason QBs get it more often than not is because people use the "where would the team be without him this season."

Someone, maybe it was mater, who mentioned the except for two teams argument. A&M played 3 good teams. Manziel only shined in one. (I'll give you 4 teams and 2 games if you count Miss State.)

Put him against a team with a remotely good defense and he gets shut down.

I have already fought this fight with them and you can't win, with most in this board, for two reasons.

1) manziel plays in the SEC and they all want an SEC guy to win.

2) Teo plays for ND. The hatred for ND, especially in the south, can't stand to see anything good happen to them.

ND play a solid schedule, as good as any top 10 team. They played big name schools and no D1AAs.

Manziel is not the best QB in the nation and didn't ever bring his team back to win a game. In the 3 biggest games he was nowhere to be found in the second half. Klein deserves it before Manziel. Also every ignores the NIU QB who just set a record for QB rushing yards while throwing for over 3000 yards, I believe.

Teo has had over 100 tackles each of the last 3 years. He doesn't play a position like Jones from UGA that gets you the stats for sacks and TFLs. He also has is solo tackles reduced by playing in 3-4 and having to share with another ILB. If you actually watch the tape and look and the scheme you'd realize that his stats are amazing considering those factors. All you in here whining he is t the best LB in the nation, you are going to look pretty dumb when he is going to his 10+ pro bowls and has HOF career. He is best LB without a doubt. Not saying he is best choice for Heisman without debate, but Manziel shouldn't be the one he is fighting for the award with. Manziel is getting love for one win.

I think Teo gets it bc of the story. But he has no where near the talent for the award.
