Sure it's not the SEC but the year before this the big 10 was not a weak conference.

This is a great hire and brings the style of football similar to LSU and Alabama.

He will recruit from a much bigger talent base as well.

I don't discredit what he's done, but I discredit the conference he did it in. When you're regularly playing Indiana, Illinois, Purdue, etc. year in and year out you damn sure better rack up some wins. (And the 2012 Big 10 Championship/Rose Bowl appearance has a gigantic asterisk beside it.)

If you're Arkansas and you're offering $4 Mil plus, a chance to compete year in and year out for a national title, I'd think you could get someone of the Petersen, Patterson, Franklin tier. As Hog points out, his staff will be key. Retaining Tim Horton (who is a great recruiter) would be a big first step, because my guess is Bielema doesn't have many in-roads in the South. I just don't think it's a great hire. It could prove to be one, but it's not on par w/ the guys I would've thought they could get.

Should've put Strong over Franklin, Franklin in 2nd tier. Going off of what I know Arky fans wanted, but you're right that Franklin and Bielema aren't that different. Franklin would be more exciting, but not necessarily better.

As far as Petersen: I'm guessing you're in the minority in taking Bielema over Petersen.

Arkansas is close to hiring a coach, but it's not Mike Gundy.
A person familiar with the search process who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the subject said the school is nearing an announcement but said, contrary to reports by Rivals.com and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, it is not Gundy. The person would not identify the prospective hire.
Arkansas did not retain interim coach John L. Smith after finishing 4-8 this season. Smith had replaced Bobby Petrino, who was fired last April amid scandal.
Gundy, in his eighth season as Oklahoma State's head coach, has been linked to the opening at Tennessee as well as at Arkansas.

To be honest I really thought Dooley was gonna turn it around. I mean hes from the Saban tree, and I have been all ove Kirby Smarts D saying he is gonna b the next great SEC head coach. I think Gruden is happy (and pretty damn good) with his job, coaching rumors never seem to come true, they always come out of nowhere.

The more I think about it, I think Bielema is a great coach but that it's POTENTIALLY a bad fit. Who he hires/retains (Tim Horton, for example) will go a long way in determining recruiting success which will in turn determine his on-field success.

My initial feelings on it weren't even colored by his prior comments (which were ridiculous); I think the surprise factor (since his name wasn't even mentioned) coupled w/ the names that were constantly in the mix (Petersen, Patterson) makes it a "Hunh?" rather than a "WOW" for me. But again: it could ultimately be a great hire. No way to know right now. (It's not like they hired Fedora, which I think would have been a bad hire.)

I tend to agree with this.
The Tennessee job is a pressure cooker to the extreme ! Taking the job would be risky considering they don't seem to anywhere near competing for the East, just yet.

Tennessee fans are expecting a pretty quick turnaround as well from whoever this coach is.

This isn't going to be a 5 year rebuild for this coach...fans believe Dooley did a lot of the legwork, but couldn't get it done on Saturdays.

I expect the new coach will get a one year pass, then will expect 8-9 wins plus from there.

So yes you are right, this won't be an easy task.

Yes I really wonder how much this is playing into the coaches wantiing/not wanting to come there. It really seems like whoever takes over is already 3 years into a 5 year plan, for better or worse. It could be good for some coaches because you already have some talent. But, I think most coaches look at it and think " They are giving me 2 years to fix 6 years of problems".
