Clemson Student Killed During Robbery

Wow, this sucks any time of year but especially around the holidays. My thoughts are with his family.

CENTRAL, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a 23-year-old Clemson University student has been shot and killed during a robbery in his home in a gated community about two miles from campus.

Investigators say several people broke into the home in the Chimney Ridge subdivision around 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley says someone shot Steven Grich and he died at the scene. Grich was a sophomore from Fort Mill majoring in electrical engineering. An autopsy has been ordered.

Pickens County deputies are investigating the incident, but no arrests have been made.

Grich lived in a community of more than 100 two-bedroom cottages and four-bedroom homes marketed toward Clemson students.

This is awful. I have a lot of friends who live in this complex, it's a popular one up there.

I'll be praying for the family and friends and the entire Clemson community.

Some are speculating it might be drug related. Kind of weird place for someone to get killed with it being an upscale gated community.

I wouldn't necessarily call it upscale, it's a student housing complex. They are nice condos but it's still student living. Most of the ones around Columbia have gates too but rarely close them. I guess what I'm saying is it's not what you picture first when you hear "gated community".

I hope they find who is responsible and punish him to the fullest extent of the law. As a college student myself who's lived in similar housing complexes, this is very very scary =(

Im just saying its upscale compared to other possible living opportunities for students. A lot of other Clemson area apts. dont have the gated community and cottage style type of setup.

It would be extremely unusual if the "robbers" weren't looking for something specifically, given the nature of that community. And to then kill him? They probably knew him before this, unless they didn't know he was there and he started fighting back.

Sad story. I'm sure some details will emerge. Hope they catch them. No reason to let scum roam the streets.

Not exactly a usual way or time to go about a robbery. I guessing drugs as well. Smart guy gets in over his head. Not the first time.

I don't think this is the first death experienced in that community. For some reason, I seem to recall at least 1 or two others.

Most mass student housing complexes like those are gated, but that doesnt mean much. Most anyone can get in. Example in Columbia is the retreat

I live in the retreat in Athens, I assume it's the same Landmark properties with colorful Easter-like houses looks nice but really shitty quality. And yes as nice as these houses look they tend to be the main target as they are often located in parts of town that aren't too pleasant. I live basically off of MLK drive in Athens and have caught someone breaking into my car multiple times, at least 4 in the two and a half years I lived there. It may seem odd, but when you really think about it it's not. They can watch the students leave during breaks and stuff and they know when to break in. I could break into my house any time I wanted if I was locked out. Rich college kids tend to have a couple things in these houses. A large TV in the den or two, xbox, games , guitars, money laying around not hidden in the rooms, and lastly DRUGS. Now think about how much money that looks like to them when they take those to the pawn shop like idiots, Friend of mine got robbed two weeks ago then again while he and two buddies were sitting on the couch they held the down in the backyard after grabbing him before he realized he was robbing a house full of people and kept a bb gun to his head until the cop got there. Yeah pretty awesome story, but this is why many people have guns I know some girls that have glocks locked away in their rooms. Just another day in the hood..

The Retreat in Columbia is also located in a not-so-nice part of town as well. Hell, almost all of USC's student apartments are located in a bad part of town. I heard about break-ins all the time when I was a student. You have to really be careful these days.
