I saw a few posts on this in the coaching carousel thread, but thought it might be worth its own thread. Texas Tech is rumored to be down to the Texas A & M OC or Chad Morris for their new head coach. OK State OC was also in the mix but just took over for Ellis Johnson at Southern Miss. Also of note is that one of Texas Tech's QBs is from the high school Morris last coached at.
If Morris doesn't get this gig, you'd have to wonder if he's less than impressive in his interviews. Kingsbury from Texas A & M is only 33 with zero head coaching experience and looking at his bio he's only got 4 years total coaching experience. You'd have to think if Morris can't beat him out for what some have said is his dream job, well he may be in Taterville for quite a while. http://www.sbnation.com/2012/12/9/37...ry-chad-morris |

Personally, I think the Texas Tech job should be Kingsbury's to lose. He's an alum, played professionally, and has had success with 2 great college qbs. He may not have much coaching experience, but other coaches have been hired on lower accolades.

I don't think he'll get the job unless Klingsbury turns it down. Which I could see happening.

He's more likely to end up there than anywhere else that has been mentioned.

Looks like a 50% chance he will get the job. This may be the year for him to leave. This may be Clemson's best season for a while as other teams they play have new coaches and the schedule is somewhat harder.May have a few players leaving early this year also.

Everything's lined up to appear so. Personally, I hope he does. He's an overpaid assistant that knows how to run an effective offense as long as he keeps turnovers to a minimum and has the play makers to make the defense miss a few tackles and/or assignments. He'll fall to any real disciplined defense, though.
At the same time, I don't see why he would feel pressured to leave. He's making sweet cash (highest paid assistant in NCAA) at a place that considers him one of their best assets. His job security couldn't be more firm other than the concerns about the troubles his system has had against championship-caliber teams. I feel like after the bowl game we'll know just how secure his job is. If he can keep Clemson in the game against LSU's D, then he's fine where he is. If LSU eats them alive and steals their lunch money every other drive, then he might be better off moving on up to HC somewhere. Take the pay raise and play his cards as well as he can to stay there or move up further into coaching. Gus Malzahn showed it could be done, why not Morris? Granted, Malzahn was a much better OC than Morris IMO. Morris would be a perfect fit for Arkansas State though - they're used to a gimmicky offense and Malzahn has proven that you can be successful there. & at the rate of head coaching jobs available at prestigious D1 schools, he'd have no problem moving into an even bigger HC position once the right one becomes available. Sorry for the long post. It's finals week, if you catch my drift.

His best option may be to try and bail now, or be content taking home a big paycheck every year running up points against inferior ACC teams. And to think, they open with Georgia next year... |

Like you say, he may be at least somewhat content to make good money as an assistant. He obviously wants to be a HC, and I'd think he'd be making at least double what he's making now if he can land the gig at Texas Tech. There is pretty much zero chance he'll land a bigger job than that one with no HC experience nor as an assistant in a major football conference. (Not meant as smack.) If his offense sputters against LSU and then Georgia, he'll likely slide way down the list for next year's vacancies, no matter how many times his offenses put up half-a-hundred against the Dukes of this world.

If he doesn't get Texas Tech, and I don't think he will, then Ark ST would be logical. If they liked Malzahn, then they should like his protoge. Either way, I don,t care, our defense owns him anyway.

If Morris goes, Boyd and Hopkins should step out too. See Exhibit A.

Morris, on the other hand, won state titles in high school there, played at A&M, and has an offense they prefer with tons of passing and not like Tubbervilles. I give him a high chance of taking it, especially if these are the only two candidates being considered, which is all the official word is right now. |
