You talk about a team screwed no matter which way they go .....
SERIOUSLY It is highly likely with the state of the ACC right now that what played out the past couple of years could continue for a while. In spite of all the rumblings, rantings, ravings and bitching by the fans, Clemson will be forever locked into the ACC simply because their BOT, President and AD toe the ACC Line and want to reamain there. Clemson / FSU and possibly VT again in a year or two will dominate the rest of the conference because THEY CAN, but neither of those teams is a legit Top 20 team. They will be ranked there simply because of Record AND THERE IN LIES THE ISSUE. In the eyes of the rest of the country (outside looking in) Clemson "Looks" like a good program. They see wins and losses and the total margin of victory. In the State of SC however we know the facts. To the nation Clemson could end up going anywhere form 9-3 to 11-1 for a stretch of years but lose to the only tough teams on their schedules..then lose their bowl games every year. End up 9-4 to 11-2 and the fans would want Swinney fired because he can't beat us, or any ranked OOC opponent. If the BOT / AD doesn't give in, IPTAY and the fans would eventually revolt and stop attending games. .... If they do give in and fire Swinney and some / all of the staff and start over, they will look like Buffoons in the eyes of the rest of the Country, to any possible "Name" coach and most importantly to recruits. Firing a 9,10 win coach once is shocking doing it again would cause some serious questions to be raised in the media aimmed at Clemson....What are they going to tell the press ?..... We couldn't beat SC so we had to fire the Sumbitch ! ![]()

I think Spurticus maybe giving Dabo a bit too much credit. It won't take much to be competitive in the ACC but the only reason they managed the past few years is due to the Morris offense. In 2011 they lost with that offense to NC State, USC, Georgia Tech, and WVU...plus tried real hard to lose to Wake Forest, Maryland, FSU, and Auburn. This year, they had a larger margin of victory (thanks Morris) but there were many games that were more competitive than the score would show.
This offense without Boyd and Watkins will be interesting and could easily go the way of WVU this year. I predict if they keep Dabo and lose Morris, unless they hit paydirt again with an OC they have a 6-7 win season in the next 5 years. |

I totally agree with what Scranton Tiger said earlier in the thread - Clemson is so used to being THE football power in the state, that the reversal of trends may lead to Dabo's demise.
However, another contributing factor may be how Swinney's team performs against Top 25 teams. Here are Dabo's numbers vs Top 25 teams (conference and non-conference). ACC 5 - 4 Non-Conference 2 - 6 (both W's came against Auburn in '11 & '12) I just don't think he has a much of a chance when he routinely recruits top ranked HS talent, and can't get them to produce W's against other elite programs from other conferences. Factor in new AD Radakovich, who's thinks Clemson is a BCS or bust program...he might want to bring in his own guy if Swinney has leveled off and can't take the next step to be a legitimate Top 10 program. Just saying...Dabo may want to keep his realtor's number handy.

Dabo indicated that if he had Spurrier's record he would be fired. So I would say....yes.

I have friends in Greenville that donate to IPTAY just so they will keep Dumbo. He is one of the better things to happen to the Gamecock program.
Now to jch81"s point: for 2.1 million you could hire the very best cheerleader in the whole wide world. (not just Pickens County) |

If Dabo loses to us again next year, he would be the first coach to lose 5 games in a row to his rival in the long history of the two schools.

When Dumbo loses to Spurrier for the fifth straight year, his backside will indeed get hot. I can see tigger nation screaming for his head next year.

He is one of the most successful coaches in the acc. That will keep his job a few more years.
They will not let him go unless he has a 7-5 or worse record or there is one hell of a coach out there that they can really land.

His seat isn't that hot.
Even the staunchest Tiger supporter knows that firing a 9/10 win coach is a flat-out embarrassment when there isn't anyone realistically who can take over and recruit the way Dabo has. It would represent organizational problems, and that would drive recruits away big time. Especially when Dabo, in all honesty, is a slick salesman and recruits pretty well. They have elite talent. |

Because of the the overall weakness of the ACC, Clemson could lose all the games you mentioned and still win their division and conference and go to a BCS bowl, because the last time I checked, OOC games don't count in your own conference title hunt. Not to mention one of those games is for the current season, so if it turned out the way you suggested, they would still be 9-3 in the regular season with the possibility of winning a championship game and BCS bowl game to get them to 11-3. If that happens, Clemson would be ridiculously stupid to fire the man. As someone else in this thread stated, Swinney has done a pretty darn good job at Clemson. It's not his fault the ACC is a bad football conference that only has two good teams.

For Comparison (ANY GIVEN YEAR):
In the SEC in either Division, lose one Conference Game and your chances of winning your Division are Slim. Lose Two and it's near impossible. In the ACC (just ask Georgia Tech how that works over there). HELL, Even Clemson lost 2 of it's last 3 Conf. games last year, and Won the ACC. In the SEC doing that is the nail in the coffin as far as winning even your own division.
