Basketball Schools Leave Big East

The presidents of the seven schools made the announcement Saturday, saying it was a unanimous vote.

The move leaves Connecticut, a founding member of the league in 1979, Cincinnati and South Florida -- three current members with FBS football programs -- up in the air concerning their futures.

The seven schools are: Georgetown, St. John's, Villanova, DePaul, Marquette, Seton Hall and Providence.

My understanding is they left in a group of 7 because that is the requirement for the NCAA tournament and they may try to take the Big East name with them. It would be more amusing to come up with Catholic league names but the Big East still means something in BBall.

I hope the 7 who left get to keep the name Big East, starting next year the Big East is anything but Big or East.

They need to grab the 4 A10 Catholics (Xavier, Butler, St Louis, and Dayton) and Creighton from the MVC and make the 12 team Catholic conference. That is easily a 5-7 bid conference and could easily make NBC Sports Network pay more than the just over a million a year each of the Big East basketball schools was going to be getting. NBCSN is need of programming in the worst way, this Catholic conference could fleece them.

When all is said and done I say the new Big East will be 14 teams comprised of the 7 now plus, St Joes, La Salle, GW, Butler, Saint Louis, Dayton, Xavier.

(Butler and GW are not Catholic though so that could be different)

I seriously think the ACC should dedicate itself to being a basketball conference. Let the various sports form the conferences and go with it. I mean like the ACC would be just one basketball conference, not the ONLY one. Then let the SEC be one of the football conferences (although an argument could certainly be made for baseball, but I think the country knows what the top dog of this conference is).

Debatable.
They lose Pitt, Uconn, Cinci, Syracuse, West Virginia and Louisville.
I'd take those teams all day over the mentioned private schools.
