I can't tell from the picture, but if he is not wearing his insignia he would not be in uniform. Anybody can go to a surplus store and buy the pants, shirt and hat.

uniforms because it is actually allowed in those services but you should NEVER see a Marine off base in the general public in their MARPAT utility uniform. If you are caught you can actually be charged and serve time for it. That is how seriously the Marine Corps takes this. That uniform is for work and work only. Very rarely sometimes they will allow Marines to wear it when they are doing something like Toys for Tots or recruiting but it is very rare. The National Guard like the regular Army does have some rules about wearing ACU's out in public but they are really not enforced and are viewed as more of a guideline that they would like you to follow. You see guys all around Columbia in their ACU's from Ft. Jackson. I even saw a drill Sgt with his campaign cover on inside Walmart once.

Well it is not really that. It stems from the Posse Comitatus Act and similar DoD directives.

It's violated all the time.As in everything else, commands change and so do policies.Army does not allow either. You are also suppose to wear your cover outdoors but most national gaurd don'tI had to correct an E-5 inside of a publix for wearing his cover. If you remember years ago the national gaurd would be called in to cordan off areas and pull security. So why not our schools protecting our most precious possessions.

Can y'all please just read FloCocks comments. This is an off the charts violation in the Marine Corps. It is not, however, a big deal at all for other branches of service. That's why you see it in D.C., Charleston, the airport, or wherever. Unfortunately, the utility uniform of all services has started to look more alike recently so to the untrained eye it is hard to tell.
Bottom line is the good SSgt needs to go home.

I think it is great, I wish there were more people like him. Don't you think some nut will think twice about trying anything at that school. People who kill children are cowards and would never attack somewhere that wasn't defenseless.

Don't care if what he's doing is PC or not. But you can bet no worthless piece of crap is going to shoot up that school while he's there.

Why not see to it that every school has one teacher/employee who carries a CCW permit and have a national training day where these teachers/employees are trained by law enforcement to be first responders. Much cheaper than staffing every school with a police officer the entire school year. If not for all the political bullshit, this would be a logical solution.
As for the Marine SSgt, kudos to him even if the Corps doesn't like it.

He said he was already discharged and only wore this one because his dress uniform was not clean and he wanted to be there the day after the Connecticut thing.

I seriously doubt if a deranged individual with a firearm will be stopped by one unarmed man standing in front of the school.

We're obviously nit-picking here, but there are a variety of uniform choices in between utilities and dress blues. Kudos to him for wanting to take action of some sort. As a father, I understand completely. However, as a Marine I say it was a horrible call.

Well, something needs to be done. Never thought I would be concerned about my eight year old going to school or my wife's safety as a teacher.

I dunno man....he's in fatigues and you don't know if he's packing or not. I wouldn't mess with him or the school.
