Call to arms continues for USC

The USC baseball team continues to rearm its pitching staff for the future. Junior RHP Tyler Johnson (6-2 170) of Midlothian, VA committed to the Gamecocks Wednesday according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. According to Johnson's coach, he increased his velocity into the mid to upper 80s in the spring. “Tyler is extremely athletic overall, and on the mound, he has a ton of potential," rival Benedictine coach Sean Ryan told the paper. "The ball jumps out of his hand, and his release is effortless. He’ll have to continue to work hard, but he has the tools to become a standout pitcher.” Johnson also played some shortstop and outfield. Johnson is the 10th commitment for USC's 2014 class and the fourth pitcher.

Midwest pitcher commits to USC

Junior RHP Brandon Murray of Hobart, IN committed to USC Friday morning according to NWtimes.com. Murray pitched at a camp at USC last weekend and was offered by the Gamecocks pitching coach Jerry Meyers. He was also drawing recruiting interest from Kentucky, Louisville, Purdue, Indiana, Central Michigan, Northern Illinois and Michigan. Last season Murray was 6-4 with a 3.03 ERA. He struck out 105 batters in 62.1 innings and teams batted .163 against him.

Anyone hear about Spartanburg Methodist third baseman Elliott Caldwell coming to USC? He apparently grew up a clemPson fan, but signed to come play with us...if what I heard was true.

SMC third baseman decides on USC

Third baseman Elliott Caldwell (6-3 205) of Spartanburg Methodist JC committed to USC Sunday night for the 2013 class according to TheBigSpur.com. Caldwell chose the Gamecocks over offers from Clemson and The College of Charleston. Caldwell prepped at Wren and played his freshman season at Winthrop before enrolling this fall at SMC. He played in 30 games for the Eagles and batted .217 with no home runs and 1 RBI. This summer he played in the Prospect League and hit .388 with 7 home runs and 49 RBIs. He also stole 27 bases.

Junior LHP Nate Matheson (6-2 215) of Hampton, VA committed to USC according to the Daily Press of Hampton Roads, VA. Matheson was offered by USC recruiter Sammy Esposito following a tournament in Florida earlier this month. He also had offers from Maryland, Old Dominion and Virginia Tech. Last season Matheson was 5-1 with a 0.91 ERA. He struck out 46 batters in in 38.2 innings. He also hit .382 with 17 RBIs. He’s the 13th commitment for USC’s 2014 class.

Hearing that Jamie Callahan's little brother Duncan may be the first commit in the 2016 class. He was Dillon's #2 behind his brother last year.

TBS free article on USC getting the commitment of a top prep baseball prospect for the 2015 class. Outfielder Kep Brown of Wando is the 16th ranked player in the country according to TBS, and chose USC over LSU. Brown is the 4th member of the 2015 class so far....

What kids do we have to worry about loosing to the draft? I know there is always a couple that we can look at and say 95% chance he never steps foot on campus

AFAIK Ciuffo and DeMeritte are possible 1st rounders.

DeMeritte I would expect to lose but I still have hopes for Cuiffo. Been committed to us for 4-5 years and is a big gamecock fan.
