Texas is one of the top 2 states in recruiting. Wth a good new coach and a Heisman in their pocket, they are aren't going to take a backseat to anybody.
Having said that, I hope SOS sends Botkin out there to renew some of his hs contacts. I wouldn't mind stealing a couple of kids from there every year.

The best thing our recruiting staff could do (fan-wise) is hold a ladies' clinic for some of the "WTF is going on with our failing recruiting class?!?!" crowd whose sole experience in recruiting happens to be the same source they're reading this post from...

Brandon Golson needs 3 more classes and will take them at Orangeburg-Calhoun
TEC. He will have 3 years to play 2. I guess we'll find out how this is going. I know he has been a problem in the past, but the other LB recruits we are pursuing are not looking that good. I don't see any downside and Botkin likes him. Currently a Arizona commit, but has always wanted to play at Carolina. Anybody want to make a prediction.

You also have to take into consideration the style of defense those teams are running. Alabama, for instance, has 15 LBs on their roster this year compared to our 11. Three of theirs are Walk-ons so we'll take them out (as they don't count for some reason...) leaving them with 12 players to fill four LB spots or three deep at each position (theoretically). We take our walk-ons out and have 9 LBs to fill two spots or four and a half for each position. That seems to be comparable depth to me. Georgia runs the 3-4 as well, and Florida and A&M run the 4-3, so they are still filling another LB spot than we are.

Next year we'll have four LB returning (counting Harris here since he's listed on the Roster at LB, and leaving off the "insignificant" walk-ons) plus the three current incoming LBs for a total of 7 to fill two spots (not counting any movement that can/will happen in the spring/fall practices). If we signed crap ton of LBs in this go around like some of you seem to be demanding we would run into the same exact problem in four/five years when they all graduate at the same time. As long as we are bringing in two or three true LBs per signing class we will be fine in filling out our depth.

With him, no. I believe in the past he has gotten some bad advice, though.

Thought so. I'm not making a statement of fact. You did. I'm just offering my opinion. The circumstantial evidence here is the fact that our recruiting has been stale for several months. No commitments, top commitments switching to other schools, not being able to close the deal on several top targets. It all indicates to me that something is not quite right, that our staff is not staying on top of these kids as well as they could be. I think we are in need of some stronger recruiters on our staff. At least one.

I agree. He was our first choice as a JUCO LB and is a bigger LB - 230lbs - which is what Botkin likes. I think everyone needs to understand that the reason he decomitted is because we basically lost interest in him once he was not a mid year enrollee. The good news is he still has interest in us and now we need him more than ever with the injury to Coop. The kid apparently has a pretty high Football IQ as well as if you remember he won a starting LB spot as a Freshman at Louisville before the NCAA red flagged him.

Great, but let's try emphasizing recruiting more anyways. You know, ... as a plan B.
