New XBOX 360 Failed

My son got one for Christmas and it literally failed in less than 10 minutes. Still going through the set up phase and it powered down. No lights or anything. At first I blamed it on my son pressing buttons on the controller. Tried everything to start it back. After 5 mins it started back like normal, then shut down again. The power supply seems overly warm and the console itself seems warm as well. The fan appears to be working so I'm guessing this thing is just deffective out of the box. Anyone else ever have a similar experience with one of these? We've had PS3 for years and it runs fine.

consoles are a hit or miss. Ive had my 360 for a few years. zero issues. my brothers breaks almost every year. xbox just refurbished it last year at this time. never had an issue with my ps3 either but my friends has broke alot. sometimes you get lucky and sometimes not. if the red ring hasnt popped up then you might be in luck

Thanks for posting so quickl. I actually won this thing through a sales spiff at work. Talked to someone there this afternoon and they said just send it back and they'd give me another "prize". Probably a Dewalt drill and saw kit. Works out ok for me, but I promised my son we'd go out and find an XBOX tomorrow so he can enjoy it on his break from school. Probably bestbuy or target.

Is take it to best buy or Walmart say you lost the recipt and exchange. Probably Walmart they are usually quick to take anything back in their system they will give you a gift card for the price and buy the new one.

Get a dust can and spray out all the internal parts of the fan and inside the tray....

on a brand new out of box unit? worked only a few mins.

Yeah I wouldn't even bother with this if it's new out of the box. It's clearly a defective unit. You'd be better off giving it back to the people for the tools or doing what others have suggested and trying to swap at wal-mart.

I bought one of the new xboxs 2 or 3 years ago and have never had any problems with mine.

yeah, I haven't been in a walmart in over 9 years and I'm not about to go there now even if it would be to stick them with it. ill return it and go buy a new one from target or bbuy, Costco. will return the bad one to the awards place in exchange for something else. was really asking about others having any similar issues with Xbox. again, we've had ps 3 for years and no issues.

All - Thanks for your suggestions. We just purchased a new one at the local best buy. I actually laughed when they offered an extended warranty, but I'm not sure bbuy will be here that long. Anyway, I heard from the rewards company that I won it through at work. They're sending me an rma, ppd shipping label, and credit for it + 250 points. There's a Dewalt drill/saw kit or a compound miter box that I have my eyes on now ;) It all worked out fine and I didn't even have to deal with wal mart.

yes, they would have but when I explained to them that it was a Christmas present for an 11 year old who didn't want to wait for February to play it, they said just return it and get something else. That's why I went out and purchased one yesterday morning at bbuy. It all worked out for the best. I'm sure they'll get it covered under warranty through whomever they purchased it from. FYI - I called and talked to XBOX/MS support on Christmas day. They actually had people working somewhere. From what we could determine, it wasn't actually the console, but the power supply since the LED would completely go out on it. It was slightly warm but not overly warm. Probably a simple fix but I didn't want to have to deal with the wait for them to warranty that either since they said it would be 2-3 weeks for me to get a new power supply.

These things happen. Every now and then, a defective unit will come off the line. I've had my Xbox since December 2010, and it still runs fine.

I do know some people that play their Xboxs to death though.
