Villanova Transfer Tyrone Johnson Very High On Gamecocks

Tyrone Johnson, a 6'3" two guard that played for Villanova last year will transfer next month. He says the Gamecocks are a major player with him. His coaches at Montrose Christian HS are very high on Frank Martin and think he has done a really good job getting Carolina turned around. Tyrone went to school with Michael Carrera (they are very good friends) and won a championship playing with him. He says he will make a decision within the next week. I believe he will be able to practice with Carolina starting next month and is eligible to play January 2014 after waiting a year.

I looked for a thread on him but couldn't find one.....this thread was titled TRANSFER.

I just read on TBS he is planning a visit to Illinois this weekend, but not
finalized. Based on the trip and proximity, he will then make a decision on Sunday.

Former Villanova PG Tyrone Johnson will choose between USC and Illinois according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports Network. Johnson has visited USC and George Washington, and Bill Gunter of TheBigSpur.com reported that Johnson will visit Illinois this weekend. Johnson was a highly touted recruit in 2011 for the Wildcats out of Plainfield, NJ. He averaged 3.3 points and 2 assists per game last season. He decided to leave Villanova at the start of this season. He has remained in school and has been working out with the team while exploring his options. Johnson will enroll in January and will become eligible next December.

He didn't make the trip because of scheduling issues. Now they are not sure if he'll have enough time for a visit before spring classes begin.....his grades are fine so that shouldn't be a problem. Per GCC.

He is announcing sometime this week, last I have heard. Canceling his visit to Illinois is a huge plus for us.

Huge pickup. He was an elite prospect coming out of high school, rated 4 stars by Rivals, Scout, 247 and ESPN. Rivals rated him as the number 52 player in the nation.

Remember, the CLA naming rights expire after this year (I think), so picking up these kids and improving our program will go a long way towards us getting a better financial deal going forward.
