Worst call ever in a college football game?

On a fourth down measurement late in the game giving Michigan first down: “Well you know what, I asked one of those other refs there, I said, ‘You know the ball did not touch the first down marker.’ He said, ‘I know it didn’t.’ I said, ‘Well, why’d you give it to him,’ and he said, ‘I don’t know.’ That’s what he said.”

I agree the ref was trying to save face. It appeared initially that he KNEW he had made a mistake. But I think he felt like Spurrier was showing him up by pointing out what EVERYBODY already knew! The initial spot was horrible. They gave UM at least half a yard on the spot. Shouldn't have even been close. They had another 4th down where they tried to QB sneak it, went nowhere, and the refs gave them a half yard spot again and they got the first. But for that Ref to give them a 1st down when they obviously didn't get it was inexcusable. Maybe the R on his shirt stood for RETARDED.

I initialy thought the ref was simply confused and pointed the wrong way. I thought he meant 1st down Cocks. But once Spurrier went ape shit on him, I thought he would fix his mistake. He just didn't.

Question is what do you do when the ref refuses to follow the rules? We challenged but we weren't really challenging the spot, we were challenging the ref's refusal to look with his eyeballs.

Its time for the NCAA to take control of the refs and getting rid of conference refs. It is obvious that there are still conflicts of interest even when alleged neutral refs are being used, i.e. this year's Peach Bowl, you had a B1G crew that was doing everything it could to screw LSU, more than likely following orders from the B1G Commissioner. There is obvious hatred by the other conferences against the SEC and they have shown they are not afraid to affect the outcome of SEC teams in bowl games.

I don't think you can tell from that camera angle. They need a camera perpendicular to the sideline for a definitive shot when the spot is that close.

I have gotten very mad watching Gamecock games in the past but I've never been as mad as a was when I saw that. Worst call I've ever seen. At least if its a play you have to make a decision in a split second this one you have all the time you need. Absolutely ridiculous. Just glad we won anyway again. Go Cocks !
