He has good pocket presence/vision. That's a start. Good size, decent mobility. He's no top 50 player, but he could potentially be a star if he has a good head on him, that's all I ask for in a recruit. Hope it pans out.

Well, you're entitled to your opinion, but it's worth noting that: Not only does Scout rank him as the #5 QB, they currently rank him as the #49 overall player.

It's also worth noting that Mangus has told Barker he's the best QB in the 2014 class. That's endorsement enough for me.

Barker names USC as current favorite

Junior QB Drew Barker of Hebron, KY Sunday named named USC as his current favorite over Tennessee. "It's because of my relationship with coach Mangus and coach Spurrier," Barker said adding that USC and Tennessee have been recruiting him the hardest. "When I went down there for the game, I really liked how the offense was run and how the coaches handle the players, and the atmosphere and the vibe I got there." Barker has ten offers at this point and is expecting one from Kentucky Wednesday. His other offers are Louisville, Purdue, North Carolina, Western Kentucky, Illinois, Cincinnati, Indiana and Louisiana-Lafayette. Barker said Tennessee is coming on strong with new coach Butch Jones. "I like coach Jones," Barker said. "He was the second coach to offer me when he was at Cincinnati. He knows me well and I know him well." Barker plans to visit USC again for the spring game. He won't go to any junior days but will take other visits. He wants to make his decision in late April or early May. Last season Barker passed for 2072 yards and 22 touchdowns and rushed for 1455 yards and 18 scores.

This is our 1A, 1B and 1C. He's a great dual threat guy and would be pretty dang good in our system. He'll be playing at 220lbs and and solid 6'3". We lead big. Gotta give G.A. his props bc he does an excellent job evaluating talent.

Yeah, I think our staff looks at level of competition. However, I don't know how much consideration recruiting services give it. Chris Smelley was ranked as a decently high recruit ( I think), and he played at a private school in Bama.

Smelley was ranked the #8 Pro Style QB by Rivals so he was certainly highly ranked.

If we can get him...I think he will start recruiting some talent as well.
If can't hurt to have a QB start getting in the ear of WR prospects.

Didn't we all say that about Connor Mitch? Turns out getting that star QB recruit doesn't always help with other talent aND WRs (not sure why it didn't but still)

This is true. Mitch had been very active for USC.

South Carolina went into the cycle knowing they were going to be extremely selective at RB and WR, and they stuck with their plan which is why you only see 1 skill guy committed.

Next year, however, wide receiver becomes a bigger priority and I guarantee you if they get Barker in the boat early they'll be very attractive to some of these receivers they are after.
