(I don't know how anyone could argue with your point after those two examples) I always thought Jason was going to be the next big thing... Boy, was I wrong. And DL? I won't even say what I'm thinking. There might be children trolling on this board.

I understand the point of the thread, and I'm a huge Byrd fan. HOWEVER, if you look at that play from the endzone. He catches that ball against his left shoulder pad NOT in his hands like he should. The ball actually hits his pads first and he pins it against them. That ball was just a hair away from being a drop.
He caught it, so I'm as happy as everyone else, but this is probably not the best example to prove your point. |

Who cares?? He's got "world class speed." Just let him run the deep post or the fly and stretch the D. "I don't think you can't out throw Byrd...."

Straight talk: Byrd has tons of speed. I was a huge supporter of his pre-season, and my expectations were not met. An honest analysis tells me he has a ton of potential, but hasn't come to fruition yet. Honestly, I think Shaw at QB holds him back. He's got the speed to get down the field and needs to be hit in stride. The play you reference he was under-thrown again. With DT playing more, I think it will help Byrd reach his potential.
Byrd needs better hands also. His catching technique needs work. I remember in 2011 vs ECU Byrd had one go through his hands that he dropped from Shaw. I think he's got the speed to make highlands like I see from west coast teams. I'd just love to see it happen in stride. Not wait and fight for an under-thrown ball. I think DT or Nosovich could really help Byrd's stats next year (and Ace, if he comes back). |

Byrd has very good hands. That ball was underthrown, and he was fighting a defender to get it. Byrd made some circus catches in the spring, his hands are not the problem. I think he starts thinking while the ball is in the air, and just needs more reps and confidence. The one that hit him in the head, and the one to Jones were balls where both receivers were looking right into the sun. Byrd will be a very good receiver before he graduates.

Love it that Connor didn't overthrow the deep ball. Geez give the guys chance. Hate it when they throw fades into the stands or post patters and 9 routes 10 yards over their heads. I know it happens. But that is one of the many frustrating things about that Florida game. Still only down 7-3 and I can remember him overthrowing at least 3 deep balls.
Oh well, still love Connor. He's as tough as nails. And he's a winner. All I care about when it's over.

Byrd's receiving skills has greatly improved since he has arrived here. I mean, damn he is a track star that has become a WR. He has done all we can ask from him and then some. Especially on Special Teams.
It's sad how many threads there have been about DB and his skills as a receiver. Anyhoo, bottom line...The Byrd man has skills.

I remember telling everyone - mark it down, Shaw is a better down field passer than Garcia. Kind of funny to think back on, because I'm saying the same thing about DT now. |

We need to work our receivers like LSU said they did theres. Get a ball machine out there and have them catch 100 balls a day. That's the only way to get better.

With that said ... I'm just glad the days of Troy Williamson and cast are gone. We averaged just shy of 10 drops a game back then.

So you're saying we should've kept Brad Scott?

I think it speaks volumes about a receiver that we have to have a thread that points out he can actually catch a football.

Most objective observers would concede he has struggled with the hands. He improved a lot this season over last, but has a lot more room to improve. Even if he never catches another ball, he's earned his scholarship from special teams play.
