I kept trying to figure out how Clowney went from going after the QB to demolishing the RB without missing a beat, and then I saw another video of the play and actually paid closer attention. If you watch Clowney's movement, he wasn't pursuing either player. Instead, he was going after the ball the whole time. and if it hadn't been a handoff, Clowney would've taken the ball right out of the QB's hand. Here's the video I saw.

Don't misunderstand me when I say this, because I would never want to be on the receiving end of such a hit, but it wasn't nearly as hard of a hit as it may have apeared to everyone. Remember, Clowney is a foot taller than Smith, and according to Ward, Clowney was about 273 on game day, so he also outweighs the boy by 100 pounds. My point is the difference in mass alone would've been enough to knock the guy backward, and the helmet came off because Clowney was attempting to stay low, but part of his helmet still ended up hitting the runner on the bottom of the helmet. Like I said, I wouldn't volunteer to take such a hit, but appearances can be somewhat deceiving at times.
