I honestly believe the team just had nothing left in the tank at that point. The defense played well because their offense is terrible.

There sure seems to be a lot of hate and vitriol towards a team whose fans and alumni are typically very complimentary of the Gamecocks and their program and fans. Maybe that's not the Gamecock fan base as a whole but a vocal minority in this thread and a few others I've read?
