Junior DL Peyton Newell of Hawatha, KS is up to 22 offers and will be one of the most hotly pursued defensive tackles in the 2014 class. His offers include USC, TCU, Baylor, Iowa, UCLA, Nebraska, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Missouri, Colorado and West Virginia. He will narrow his list to a top five this summer. Newell was offered by the Gamecocks last summer and will make his first visit to the school the first weekend in February. "I've always been interested," Newell said of USC. "The SEC is a great conference. They are doing a lot of great things with the defensive linemen." Newell was tuned in to USC's bowl game and like most everyone else, he was amazed by the Clowney Hit. But for him, that play said as much about USC's coaching on the defensive line as it did about Clowney. "It was a big hit but it also showed technique," Newell said. "It was a legal hit and it shows how great the coaching staff is down there." This past season Newell had 63 tackles with 35 for loss and 10 sacks.

DL Peyton Newell of Hawatha, KS came half way across the country for USC's recent junior day and left with a good impression of the program. "I was impressed with the facilities and the coaching staff," Newell said. He spent most of time with recruiter GA Mangus but also met with defensive line coach Deke Adams and Steve Spurrier. "I liked coach Adams," he said. "I can definitely see myself playing down there." Newell will go to junior days at Kansas this Saturday and Oklahoma March 9th. He has over 20 offers including USC, TCU, Baylor, Iowa, UCLA, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Cal, Purdue, BYU, Duke, West Virginia and Arizona State. He's also getting strong interest from Georgia. Newell said he wants to trim his list to five by his spring break the week of March 23rd. USC has a good chance of making the five. "I definitely have high interest in them," Newell said adding that distance is not a factor. He will try to visit USC again this summer. He'd like to make his decision around the start of the season.

His high school is in the "Big Seven League" I don't know what that means, but it sounds like he is playing the big boys in Kansas (as much as that is worth). Maybe it doesn't mean big schools though.

Newell attended USC's junior day last month and has remained in touch with the Gamecocks. He says they are still strong with him. "They are coming up this spring when their camp is over," he said. 'I'm getting a lot of handwritten mail. I was going to announce a top five next week during my spring break but I'll wait until the end of summer. There's a really good chance they (USC) will be in the top five." Newell is up to 29 offers with Arkansas, Georgia and Oklahoma three of the most recent. He has been to Kansas for a junior day and will go to either Georgia or Alabama this spring. Alabama hasn't offered but is showing a lot of interest. Some of his other offers are Nebraska, UCLA, TCU, Oklahoma State, BYU and Arizona State.

nebraska...oh yeah, the team that has the coach who looks like the bad guy from the Harry Potter movies...I remember when we held their offense to under a 50 yards in the 2nd half a little over a year ago.

j/k, nebraska is a great school with a lot of football tradition, but we are leagues better than them right now. He should come to USC.
