Preseason rankings matter (even though they are rarely accurate) only because they help you in the long run if you are a 10+ win team. Case in point, that's why UGA finished ahead of SC, and SC finished ahead of Clemson.

What was Notre Dame's preseason ranking...how about so cal's? I swear you people will tell yourelves anything and then believe it. The reason Uga finished ahead of us was they only lost 1 game..while we lost 2 in the regular season, they played in the SECCG and played the National Champs to within 1 score. I still feel USC is the better team but it's not really that hard to see why they were voted ahead. We are ahead of clemson because we beat clemson, at their stadium, and they are nowhere near as good as USC. There is not even a debate if clemson is better than South Carolina like there is with USC/Uga

ND was #1 because they were the only team to go unbeaten. You can't compare them to other teams because no one else had their record. SC's ranking absolutely played a role because they were the highest ranked 3-loss team heading into Week 13 even though all their losses weren't to great teams.

If Thompson doesn't make that TD pass with 15 seconds left then Clemson is ranked ahead of SC....several spots ahead of them. In other words, everyone would think Clemson is better.

3 loss team? No, it's probably because their 2 losses were games they lost, at two of the hardest places to play, back-to-back, at a time when both teams were playing well..and a complete beatdown of uga. But your 'ifs and woulds' scenario sounds really fun and i'm sure that helps you sleep better at night

These two polls show our consistency and I like that. Yeah, we dropped to 14 or 16 (I think) this past year but we were able to finish strong against two ranked opponents. I think now that we are accustomed to consistency (may need to work on consistent play though) and a taste of winning, we can work on moving up closer to that number 1 spot.

Many have said in the past that if you 'win anyway,' things will work out but that's only half right. For a time this season, we were winning but staying at the same ranking because other teams ahead of us werent losing and we werent winning with style enough to hop over them. We should have proven to the country that we were the best 2 loss team in the nation but I think we were still behind Stanford and TAMU in the polls. We missed out of a better bowl because of that. I think this year we work on that.
