Does this mean the Panthers are automatically out of the running for any top GMs? I can't imagine a hot commodity front office guy is going to be interested in going somewhere where he has no say in who the coach is.

That's exactly what it tells me. I think Richardson waited a week to tell Rivera he would be back because he was contacting other GM's to offer them a job. Guess he got turned down.

Gettleman comes to Carolina from the New York Giants where he served as the Senior Pro Personnel Analyst last season after working as Director of Pro Personnel the previous 13 years.

Anyone hear that sound? That is the sound of the overpaid players crapping their pants. Gettleman is coming in has no emotion connection or attachment to players and is going to clean house. If you are fan of some of these players expect to see them in a different uniform next season.

Clean house, tank next season to get the team's salary cap in order, and leverage the #1 overall pick next year, Clowney, to your benefit. Whether that means picking him up, or trading around due to the inevitably high demand for his services.

ok, so we are currently over the cap for next year, we have around 136 mil in contracts for next year but the league wide cap is only supposed to be around 120 mil....so we are roughly 16 mil over the league cap

so we def have to cut players to make it under cap.....now when you cut a player you have cap penalties based on their signing bonus b/c that is guaranteed money

when you trade or cut a player on the team, the team trading/cutting them is still responsible for that bonus

for an example lets say the panthers sign a player this offseason to a 4 year deal with 20 mil in signing bonus, a bonus is evenly split up over the 4 years (or 5 mil a year for 4 years).....then come preseason the panthers cut/trade him, the panthers would have to pay for all 20 mil of that bonus split up over 2 years and that would be the cap pen and would count against the overall salary cap

also to go with that example say the panthers want to cut/trade that same player with 2 years left on his contract, then there is only 10 mil left in the bonus and that would be split up over 2 years, the current year and then the next year

now there is a date in the NFL where you can cut a guy and have their bonus only go on one year of their books, i cant remember what day that is tho

but whenever a team cuts a guy they have to consider these penalties
