Considering the magnitude of the game, the clock situation, the score and the number of clutch plays..... was the last drive in the Outback Bowl the best in Gamecock history in your opinion?

2004 vs Arkansas wasn't too bad. Made us bowl eligible, and Troy Williamson broke that tackle for the score, all with a about a minute left. One to remember for sure.

wasn't really a whole lot on the line other than pride, so I don't know if magnitude was that high, but it was damned impressive, and lot of fun to watch with my michigan friend

The "I can throw the fade" was pretty good, although the stakes weren't as high as the Outback.
Phil Petty drove us down the field and got popped pretty good, twice, and finally knocked out of the game. When you consider what was at the beginning of the year, your 6th QB, comes in on about 4th and 17, cold, in the face of an all out blitz, and throws a perfect pass from around 30 yards or so, it doesn't get much more difficult.

I have said all along that drive defined the NEW CAROLINA. The old Carolina would have folded

What's funny about "The Fade", is while its is a legendary play in history, my brain is tricked into thinking that go ahead TD was the last score with time dwindling. When, in fact, we got the ball back again and kicked a field goal before it was all said and done.
Not to take anything away from it, it was a legendary play, I still remember where I was watching the game. AT my buddy's house in Rock Hill (I was at Winthrop at the time). His parents weren't home, we dragged his dining room table into the den. We grilled steaks, made french fries, I think we even had some desserts laid out on the table watching the game. We jumped up and down yelling and high fiving - what a great time to be a Gamecock! |

Certainly ranks as one of the best and perhaps if you restrict this to the best drive in Gamecock BOWL history then it may be. However, if it's open to all games there have been quite a few drives of this type to win a game late. Unfortunately, it has also happened the other way where the opponent mounted a late drive to crush our hopes. However, this is a different time and the Gamecocks are no longer having to play "over their heads" to win against quality opponents. They can do it on talent and execution now and that is what makes current teams so appealing to long time Gamecocks.

OK, memory isn't that great - but I think I recall a last minute touchdown pass with nothing on the clock to win the game ( stadium was all but empty )
1978 - Ole Miss, maybe ??

Don't know about 1978; however, the fade was against Miss St which automatically in my mind makes it less impressive. The Arknasas game was cool (ironically enough the final drive was lead by Newton given another thread) but again it was against a 3-5 Arkansas team.
This was against Michigan and was heralded with 4th down passes, a narrow escape by Shaw, and a final second long TD by a backup. |

http://www.totalfootballstats.com/Te...27&Season=1978 And it seems like we did the same to Wake Forest...but C.R.A.F.T. is pretty strong as I get older. Digging a bit it might have been 1980 with a 39-38 win.

The 1984 game at Clemson was my favorite game winning drive. Took over with just a few minutes left in the game, start the drive inside our 20 and score to tie the game with just a few seconds left. Then miss the game winning extra point only to be given a second chance when Clemson was penalized. Kicked the game winner for our first 10 win season on Clemson's home field.
