More than likely he contacted USC and there is some sort of prior connection with someone in his family. Could be wrong but that is typically the case when that much distance is involved.

I know it's early, but do we have the chance for staying power with this guy and the other guy we offered from LA? If we did, it would be huge to have it with two guys from a state we've never really recruited.

Cobb has gotten much stronger and much more defined, and he plays like a freight train coming downhill. He's gotten bigger, but his speed has not been affected, which is impressive to see because Cobb can cover a lot of ground quickly. The best thing about his game is that he's coming into his body and he looks more comfortable on the field, making plays, and he's becoming a more mature player.

LB, Los Angeles (CA) Salesian: At one point, signs pointed to the 6-2 and 215-pound outside backer landing with a team from the Pac-12 Conference. That potential route to playing college ball, however, no longer applies to him. Cobb has emerged as name that's recognized on the national level. Ohio State, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Texas Tech have offered him. On a smaller scale, but equally important, Boise State and SMU also have scholarships waiting for Cobb. Not surprisingly, Oregon and USC have recently expressed interest.

Cobb is aggressive, fast and physical with the versatility to align at multiple positions as a two-way player. A punishing blocker at fullback and downhill tailback who could serve either role in goal-line packages at the next level, but we feel he has every-down-linebacker potential and could be a real disruptive one.

Salesian: It might be easy for some individuals lined up at the second level to get lost in the shuffle during tournaments such as this, especially with the onus put on the skill position players. Not Cobb. The 6-2 and 215-pound junior was as competitive as they come. He did not give an inch. The nation's No. 12 recruit at his spot on the field in the 247 Composite Rankings, Cobb locked down an offer from Florida State on Saturday. A few days beforehand, Miami sent him a scholarship.

Cobb has bulked up a lot this offseason, but that has not hurt his speed or athleticism. The four-star is a monster in the middle and hits hard with pads on, and he also proved at the Los Angeles RCS that he's excellent in coverage. He uses his hands well and then breaks on the ball well, plus he's strong so holding up receivers at the beginning of their routes is no problem.
