I love them but eat them maybe once or twice a year. Every year my friends and I go to Myrtle Beach for Mustang Week and we eat at Benjamin's. Crab legs come on the buffet, and we put a hurting on plate after plate. I hate I don't get to eat them often, but the discipline of not splurging on them just makes it better when I do get to destroy a few plates.

Depends on where you live. I get all different kinds of seafood here in Wilmington for cheap. It's awesome.

Although Crabs (and Lobsters) are plentiful. Suppliers control them in order to keep the market profitable (or very profitable). It is amazing that this item is a luxury item (economically considered) when 75 years ago it probably had the same cache that we give to bologna today.

There is not a shortage in the sea. WE just catch a good amount that my be right about enough or just less than what buyer want so the buyer pays more for the items in th population controlled crab area.

Always check Bi-Lo here in SC. in the summer they have crazy deals. This past summer they even had snow crab legs as low as 3.99 a pound. We were buying 4-6 pound bags for under $25, and they have whole live lobsters for 9.99 each, cheapest you will find here. It sucks though when I lived in Rhode Island you could get live lobsters every morning fresh caught off the docks for about 5-7 bucks a piece and at my favorite seafood restaurant they have something called the "Triple Culls" which are Three WHOLE lobsters they only have one claw each but tons of meat and you get the three lobsters with potatoes and two sides for $23 bucks. you cant beat that! but yeah always be on the look in the grocery store flyers!

I think it comes to to the obvious supply and demand, but there's another important factor.
Crab legs are also seasonal which limits their supply and boats are only allowed to catch up to their quota (US).

Lobster used to be prison food. Today there is a glut that has caused many lobster men to stop putting out their traps. I eat here on odd occasion. They have been sending me e-mails lately with big discounts: http://www.bostonlobsterfeast.com/RestaurantIndex.cfm

I worked at a seafood buffet for a few summers. Most days we only allowed to eat the normal crap left out at the end of the night. Every once in a while we'd have a surplus of frozen legs and the owners would let us go to town on what seemed like limitless legs. I got really good at cracking and snacking with speed to out eat the other employees.
I smelled like a day old clam after every shift. My roommates made me take off my work clothes outside.

Not true, it depends if you had to pay for the dance or by the hour. Crabs could be EXTREMELY expensive. |
